Hi Dave,
The magnets are on the outside because you get more voltage out of that configuration vs internal rotating magnets. I don't honestly know the physics but that's how it works out.

I think that there are two things that prematurely kill the Odssey batteries:
1. not charging at high enough of a voltage
2. Slow drains while sitting

There usually isn't much to those things, you need big wire/current from it(#6 probably) and small wire/current to it(#18 probably).
