Christopher,

I have a similar exhaust on my Kitfox IV. I am pretty sure that is a stock Rotax exhaust. It is called the "rear "exhaust model.
The cone has been cut and rotated just over 90 degrees.
I think the Elbow is the stock Rotax part, but the "y" pipe is a little shorter than a stock 582 one. ( about 1 1/2 " ) This was done to make this exhaust work under the cowl and I have heard that is might cost about 4 or 5 HP although I have never seen a dyno sheet to prove that.
The outlet has been extended from stock as well to hang low out the bottom of the Kitfox. This outlet pipe has less effect on length that does the cone that has been altered.

Your total length from exhaust port to the Rotax muffler canister is very important. Changing this length will likely effect your performance and give you flat spots in different power settings so be forewarned.

That being said , I am sure you could get another 10 to 30 HP out of your 582 but at the cost of doing your own R & D and that could cost alot engine parts. Rotax has spent millions on this and the stock exhaust does seem to make the engines very reliable with a good power band at the rpms we use.

Where to buy ? I am not sure but check with John Mc Bean. If he does not have I will make you one but the cost will be based on what i get a used stock pipe for.
Watch for FWF packages for sale from a Kitfox and see if they will part out the exhaust.

As far as I know, the Y, elbow, and muffler were all Rotax
parts modified by Skystar. The Y appears to have been shortened, the
elbow shortened and tightened, and the muffler was a 180 degree unit
that was cut and welded to turn double 90 at right angles plus the
outlet was replaced with an elbow and extension to clear the bottom.
Ask John McBean at KitfoxLLC, but I'll bet you'll have to
have one fabricated. Dave's already given you some guidelines, but
watch the 660mm from exhaust flange to muffler box. (Look at the 582
installation manual on line.)

Guy, Do you have a link for this length ?
660mm = about 26 " - I thought is was about 28" but I forget now .
a few inches can have a big effect.

Well, I went out last night and changed my exhaust to closer to Stock ROTAX specs .
So far -- a few test flights in this am and results are positive.
Quite likely the alterations that Skystar actually did cut some HP from the 582 as suspected. Proof is there now, to tweak a bit more and see if more can be had Smile

Simple mod has turned successful so far .
Added in some the the header that was chopped off by Skystar.

Net results were 200 - 300 RPM increase at idle, static and wide open in level flight. I can only assume that a few extra ponies have been had.

I have no re-pitched and at the same fuel flow as pre exhaust change I am cruise 3 to 5 mph faster. I just changed props from my seaplane prop ( warp 3 blade 68" wide tip ) to a IVO medium 72" 2 blade. Both seem to be about the same 92 to 93 (at) 6000 rpm at 20 liters/hour and this is with the King Fox 21 " x 12 tires that cost about 2 to 3 mph. Surely will wheel pants and smaller tires the 582 fox would see over 100 mph. Temps 54F now when i last flew and was seeing 1200 fpm climb on average.

So if you want the extra HP this is a easy mod to do . I am not done yet either as I am going to try to lengthen it further but I think the change will be minimal. But will not know till I try it.

Did you leave the elbow bend tight as modified by Kitfox? How about a
picture? I would love a few more ponies.

Well the Y pipe is what was cut I think at Skystar as well as the 90 Elbow but I added mine to the elbow. Your elbow will be near the cowl and might burn a hole in it but a air outlet could be added there or just a bump. The muffler will not longer be straight below the engine but on a little angle. I am sure there is a way to alter more but I have not spent the time on it yet.

Basically I just added 1 1/2 inches to the header directly onto the elbow on the top of it. I could have added to the y pipe but it seemed easier to do it this way.

Just out for a 1 hour flight with a friend , I have on the IVO medium right now and it worked well about 4 mph faster that without the exhaust mod.
Now all we need to do it put a different pipe on it and see another 5 or 10 hp Smile

Dave,

With about 250 RPM gain at WOT you have increased power with about 12% like going from 60 to 67, or 65 to 73 Hp

increasing speed with 3,85 %

Further more to my last post on 582 exhaust mods.

I looked closer at that Elbow today that I modified and it looks like it was just a Elbow that was hand made rather than a Rotax Elbow. It you look at the pic you will see the Rotax radius is not as tight as this one. I will likely have to play around a bit more now and see what else can be had.

Has anyone else tried this yet ? I figure that I am still short from Rotax specs.

Ok , I not sure if this topic getting a bit stretched or not , maybe a new topic if anyone thinks fit.

I finally got time to day to make a new elbow from scratch. It turned out about the same as the Skystar one except it a bit longer at bottom rather than at the top as I modified the last one and gained the HP.

I had to cut the tapered pipe where it joins onto the Rotax muffler and rotated it . length should be the same (+/- 1/8" ).

Wind today was 10 G 15 knots so it was hard to get a good handle on take off performance if better or not. I think i got about 50 to 70 more RPM static, really not a big deal. Got about 10 take offs and landings in at a few grass strips and worked ok.

Could not find a camera last 2 days around here - 3 kids plus a wife -- who knows where it is now. Will try to get some pics when I find it.

Overall I give this mod a thumbs up for performance gain.

Has anyone used a tuned pipe other than the Rotax muffler on their 582 Kitfox and if so what results did you see. ?
