Hi
I'm plans building a 601XL and am new to the list but need some info on
the 6 AN4-15A spar bolts in plan 6W4 (issue 10/04). I find the bolt
grip length with the 2 required washers to be about 0.5mm too long. It
is satisfactory if a further washer is added under the bolt head but
with only 2 washers the nut can tighten onto the grip without properly
holding the spar together. Has any other plans builder had this problem
and is another washer ok?

Hi Greg,
I'm a kit builder, but I think the issue you raise applies to all
versions of the XL.
The plans are not the final authority on bolt selection for any part
of the plane. This is especially true in the main spar attach
section since the two outer bolts on each wing must go through the
uprights and the 4 inner bolts do not.
I think the best way to deal with the bolt length question is to use
what ever bolt length gives you the correct joint -- without regard
for the plans specification. In case of the wing attach bolts, this
means you will probably need 8 of one length and 4 of a longer
length. If your particular plane winds up using a different
arrangement of bolts then that is fine.
Even for kit builders, purchasing additional AN bolts is very
easy. I get mine from Aircraft Spruce, but there are several other
fine suppliers of these parts. They are not very expensive, so
having a few extra left over is not a big deal. It pays each builder
- even kit builders - to learn the proper designation for each type
of bolt. The biggest issue is the designation for drilling the bolts
for safety wire or cotter pins. For a bolt with no drilled holes the
"A" designation is required.
Good luck,
Paul

In this application, I would want the shank (unthreaded portion) to go
all the way through the spar. And a little shank sticking out. Add
washers as necessary. Be SURE that the nut torques against the washers
and does not bottom on the shank.

Three washers is acceptable, I believe four is the maximum allowable. As I recall, I used three washers on the eight inboard bolts but only two on the four outboard bolts that go through the uprights. The extra washers were installed under the bolt heads.
