Good day....or night....to All,

It's late here so I figure to post this and call it a night. For those that have the Jab3300 fitted to their aircraft I have a question. I have mounted the lower cowl...and have placed the upper cowl in place.....but then I started wondering....I can screw into the fuselage with the rear of the top cowl but what have people done to secure the front of the top cowl?....I would imagine the top bolts to the bottom....but what have "those that have gone before" done? Brackets? Plates?

Hi! Mike
From one who has “been and done!”
It is a mandatory requirement in the UK that the top cowl has a pair of permanent clips either side of the spinner(almost under the spinner). The clips are bent in the shape of a letter “L” inverted and pop riveted to the lower cowl so that by depressing the top cowl the short leg of the “L” will engage into a slot on the top cowl. I believe it was as a Jabiru Mod. that mandated it. (all as a result of someone’s cowl departing in flight.) This supplements the standard Jabiru clips with “R” safety clips.
My Top Cowl installation at the rear  was (and still is with the new Rotax) engaged into four tapered pins set into the firewall. (This eliminates any possibility of rain water accessing the cabin/panel through screw holes) I used four of the Europa tapered door pins with the mating sockets glassed into the underside of the rear of the top cowl.
I needed Ľ” gap between the front of the cowl and the spinner to first engage the tapered pins and drop the front to receive the clips and Jabiru clips.
This makes for a very quick and convenient cowl removal.
Hopefully your cowl is ex-Jabiru and has flanges round top and lower horizontal mating edges?
Regards
Bob Harrison G-PTAG (Was Jab 3300 now 914 Rotax.)

Hi Mike

Didn't your cowl come with 6 aluminum flanges to fasten to the lower cowl that the upper cowl then slides over and can be fasten the the flanges? Mine did and it works quite well. I can send you photos if needed.

If I received these clips with the FWF kit I'll have to give a good look around because I don't remember seeing them. If you have a few pix of these clips, it might jog my memory.
Thanks.

Hi Mike

I tried to send you some cowl photos to your email address on your post but it was returned as undeliverable... Do you have another address that I can send them to?

Hi! Mike
The clips are over centre clips with a hook on the top cowl and a bar on
the lower cowl . Then when engaged a small "R" spring clip makes a
positive secure. If you have the Jabiru Cowl there should be recesses in
both sides of the top ane bottom cowl. I can't sent specific pics
because I've sold my cowls.
However there's a picture on the web at :- http://www.crix.org.uk
Click on Bob Harrison's Europa G-PTAG
Go to :- Cooling Mods
Select :- Port View.
ALSO look at "Cowling View No. 3 " to see the sockets for the rear cowl
tapered pins.
Unfortunately I still can't find the front clips since they are just
behind the spinner.

Bob,

Thanks so much.....a few pix are worth several thousand words. So the top cowl is set on top and slide back to mate with the tapered pins mounted on the firewall and the cam locks up front secure it in place. Do you know if there are more than the one cam locks on each side? I do have a Jab cowl but I must have gotten a set before they added the recesses.

Hi! Mike.
Yes I explained that even with the clips you now see, the PFA require another inverted “L” shaped clip pop riveting to the lower cowl either side of the spinner so that the “foot” of the inverted “L” engages with a suitable slot in the upper cowl by depressing the upper cowl to get it behind the foot of the “L”.
I’ve re-read this description a number of times and can’t think of a way to improve it. If you can’t understand I’ll have to do a sketch and scan it and attach it. Let me know.
Otherwise there is only one of the over centre clips on each side. You will need to shorten the tapered pins in the firewall and round them to be only about Ľ” of taper and a small amount of parallel diameter .

Thanks Bob,

I finally get what you are talking about. No sketch needed, but thanks for the offer. I went to your website and checked out a few of your pix. They told all that I need.

I really appreciate the help.

Bob & All

You need to remember that the pressure inside the cowl is quite high,
Wink a few inches of water pressure equivalent to 60/80 kts airspeed,
(guess of internal cowl pressure). Multiply 1/2 PSI by the area of the
cowl and it adds up to a serious amount of load. 500 lbs? I think PFA
are right.
