I'm doggedly working my way through 'Final Assembly' and a seemingly
endless 'punch list'. A lot of nitty detailed things that don't provide
a lot of 'feedback' However today was different. while I was (at) OSH I
ran into Rod Bower http://www.ramairforhomebuilts.com/default.htm
who built the Ram Air system I'm using.

Rod was there with what turned out to be his award winning (Lindy) RV-8
on display. It is truly a thing of beauty, and Rod is a MASTER BUILDER !.

While we were talking he showed me an update he has made to his Ram Air
system. For those of you with updraft induction, this is probably not of
interest, But for any of you that have a forward facing Fuel servo. And
are looking for some free added power this is definitely something you
should consider. I thought the original design was one of the most
cleverly engineered items I had come across during my build and my
personal search of 'best of breed'. His unit satisfies 3 different modes
of induction with the same device, 1. Filtered Air. 2. Alternate Air, 3.
Ram Air. But this latest update is an improvement on the design and
adds an additional margin of safety for the alternate air mode. AND
it's really PRETTY !!!

I've got no interest in Rod's business other than a very satisfied
customer who wants to see him succeed and continue to be an asset to the
builder community. I can't verify this personally ( at least not for a
short while!) But other that have installed his system report seeing
anywhere from 1" to 1 1/2" increase of MP when the Ram Air is opened.

I can attest to the beauty of Rod's RV-8. I revisited the thing 4 or 5
times during OSH just to take it all in. He is quite a builder.
Regarding the RAM air system one has to be very careful as to what you
are ordering. Deems & I have almost the exact same engine but my
injector body opening I something like 0.5" larger than Deems which can
be an issue. Also worth mentioning is the significant cowl mod to get
these units to work as intended. See Deems cowl mod as an example.
That being said with the BPE forward facing cold induction system and
RAM air we are getting something like 29" of MP in some phases of
flight. That is filtered RAM air.

Robin,
Are you using the FM300 that it's 1/2" bigger? If so, what did you do to adapt it?

Mike, I'm also using the FM300, I made a mold of the modification that I
made to my cowl and sent it to Rod he's got it and can produce a
fiberglass part to make the change to the James cowl much easier, from
my understanding he can handle either the FM200 or the FM300 with his
set-up.

I have the FM300. I was sure Deems had the FM200 as BPE told me I was
the first to get the FM300 on their builds.
I did not have to "adapt" to the larger opening because we did not use
the Bower air box. I like the box in theory and it would have definitely
made life easier in some ways but we did not want to modify the lower SJ
cowl inlet. We like the smile opening. Our solution was to build a
custom air box that turned out to be pretty simple to develop. SJ
recently sent us photos of a prototype air box but then they saw ours
and commented that they went the long way around the barn vs. our simple
solution. There is a whole air box assembly while ours uses the lower
cowl as part of the air box. Photos of our air inlet are detailed here:
http://www.painttheweb.com/rv-10/SJ_Air.htm
Note how close the front of the FM300 is to the lower cowl. As you can
see we removed the extension plate to give us additional room. The
curvature of the lower cowl comes very close to the FM300. Our design
self engages when the lower cowl is put in place. Not pictured a simple
alternate air inlet we built on top of the air box.
One thing I like abut our system is the flat high flow air filter. The
round opening is sitting right behind the filter vs. the cone style
filter that has a hard plastic face exposed to the RAM air requiring the
air to wrap around the filter and into the FM300. This is probably
insignificant but every bit helps.
BTW yesterday flying back form the painters shop:
5,500', 23.5/23.5, 187 kts.GS
