Hi Ned,
Unfortunately, the critical distance for me is the distance from the rear of the hinge to the rear of the spinner backing plate.
I used N28840 for the initial fitting and mock-up of the cowling. I used N119ST for the flight tests (Brian, I REALLY need the length of your hinge to spinner) and installed the first one on mine. All of these, to the best of my knowledge, are the same length.
When I installed the cowling on N1976T, I found I had to trim the center hinge by about 1/4 inches. At the time, I didn't think anything about it. Now that I'm fitting another cowling, and it's shorter, I'm trying to figure out why. I finally measured the distance from the firewall to a point on my engine mount and compared it to three other planes. That distance is 1/4 longer on mine.
Please, anyone on Team-Grumman, measure the distance from the rear of the hinge on your cowling to the rear of the spinner bulkhead. I may have to change the tooling for two different cowlings.

Gary, I stopped by my plane today and measured the cowl dimension. It is 39
3/4". My Tiger is a 1979 #1321.

Gary, I measured four tigers here on the field at DXR
1978 AA5B s/n 696 39 ¾” back of hinge to the back of the spinner backing plate. Note: no sag in lord mounts spinner backing plate distance to cowl equidistant top and bottom.
1979 AA5B s/n 0942 39 ¾” ditto
1991 AG5B s/n 10137 39 ¾” ditto
1979 AA5B s/n 1250 40” - however lord mounts are worn, top of spinner backing plate to cowl face is ¾” gap while bottom gap is 3/8”. Engine visually sagging.

I've received a few calls and emails about the location of the bulkhead. Let's just say the rear of the spinner where the spinner should be flush with the bulkhead.
Thanks. So far, I've only received one 40 inch measurement. That is weird.

Gary,
I hesitated responding before this, because I thought you meant to the rear of the bulkhead where it mates to the crankshaft flange, and I had no way of accurately measuring that without a de-cowl.
If you're looking for the measurement from the rear of the cowl hinge to the rear of the spinner (flush with the rear outer edge of the bulkhead), mine is 40" (pic attached) This is a 2004 AG-5B.

Thanks Mike. I'm glad to hear there are a few other 40 inch measurements out there.
I'm going to talk to the cowling fabricator and see how difficult it is to move the forward edge of the cowling opening. Right now, those with 39 3/4 inch installs will need a special or cut down hinge.
