My existing trailer wing cradle / slings (the original rubber straps) are now perished and cracked and need replacing.  I have already lined the originals with a thin carpet material to stop chafing and rubbing of the leading edge and wing surfaces.

What do people advise?  A like-for-like replacement or is there a better alternative out there to use that is strong C flexible and does not chafe C rub or mark the wings in any way?

Thanks

Hi! Sean
Best thing is some conveyor belting which has some plys of fabric in it. Then line it with carpet. Speak to some food machinery repair outfit they should either have a new length or some scrap belting.

the original strps were probably made from wet suit material. you can buy that material from any shop that sells these suits to divers.

I made a rigid glass fibre cradle, using the wing as a mould, and then lined it foam from a camping sleep mat. Holds the wings steady on the trailer. Works well for me - almost no rubbing.

Cheers,
I have had the original rubber belt craze and fail. I recovered some
unused but still strong carpet material and fashioned a sling from that. It
took some fiddling to account for thickness and so forth, but I then set
some plastic sheeting over it (having made several sets).
To keep it supple and thwart the ravages of winter and summer
extremes, I cover both slings with those ubiquitous shopping bags we all
love to hate. Works for me.

One option would be to put a layer of microfiber fabric over your carpet/rubber/etc. as the final contact material with the wing. Microfiber is extremely soft (it's what your eyeglass cleaning cloths are made of) but is very durable (it's what a lot of furniture is covered with these days).

Because the fibers are microscopically thin, they're woven extremely close to one another so dirt and debris can't penetrate and brushes right off.

Opt for one of the thicker versions for durability's sake. It's available at any fabric store in just about any color and is dirt cheap. Buy enough to replace every year or so as the sun and weather will eventually get to it.

Sean,

I replaced the rubber straps with solid massive wood. So the wings are almost fixed when in trailer. The shape of the wooden blocks is copied from the wings and they were covered by self adhesive carpet tape. What is important I wrap the wings (the section which is in the cradle) before loading them to the trailer by sling (kitchen?) film. That prevents very effective all the rubbing (check photo "Ryanair").

Fred

Yes. That is an original factory trailer and I bought it from Germany almost as unused.
BTW it´s price was just 100 euros - do not ask why.

I made some mods like those wing cradles and what´s most important,
a second axle. I think that is a must like an insurance! It is quite usual to see a trailer beside road
and it has lost one tire and a serious accident has followed.

I asked myself what will happen to my Europa omboard on the trailer and such a thing happen?

We have dual filters, accus, ignitions, radios etc. to make our day - trailer w 2nd axle was the 1st in my safety list.
As we know - road traffic to and from the airport is dangerous and the most riskiest part of flying...

Later I add also a full floor to prevent shit, sand, mud and water to spoil my plane when trailering it.
Attached a photo - maybe the floor is visible.

Raimo,

Very informative post...thank you.

I've experienced the very thing your twin axles can handle. On a
Sunday afternoon, 100 miles from Nowhere, I shredded a trailer tire
after the wheel bearing failed while towing a glider. With no
available service for repairs, I was able to continue at reduced
speed, all the way home with 2 axles and 3 wheels...my glider was,
however, much lighter weight than our XSs.

I also like your floor and multiple signs, reflectors, etc. to protect
your ship.
