I just had a file come through that had an attachment or embedded
picture that was over 3 Meg in size. With dialup that is unacceptable.
Please use smaller files/embedded picture sizes.

Agreed. It is always best to be careful.
Ron - Can your email program skip large messages? In Thunderbird on my laptop, it fetches the first part of the text and then displays a message allowing the rest of to be downloaded or ignored.

I agree. I have had several in the last few days that tied up my dialup system FOR OVER AN HOUR. The sender was advertising some things he wanted to sell. That's fine, but how about reduceing the size (mb) to mere kb ... the photo will still be just fine; we don't need ultra pixel fidelity.

I reduce all pics I send over the I'net to 640X480. Aught to be a
'standard' ..... which it is, kinda.

The silly thing is that Windows XP and Vista make it so easy to avoid
this sort of thing. If you are viewing a picture and then right click
and then send, the program will offer to resize the picture. I work at
an ISP and big attachments clogging up dialup mail accounts is our most
common help desk problem.

I am sure it was a post from me. I sent 3 photos totaling 1.2
(one-point-two) Mb offing to sell an RV-8 Cowl at a significant
discount. I assumed I was doing a service to some -8 builder on a budget
(not a money making venture). I could have slimmed down the images even
further but I wanted to make sure the prospective buyer was able to see
detail. Sorry it's been about 16 years since I was dial up.

The sender is not important. What happens is that my email downloads
that message and effectively ties it up until done. I know that dialup is
antiquated but it is what I have.
I had to disconnect from the internet then go into my email via the web
portal
and find the message and delete it.
My safety was never in jeopardy but it is a nuisance. This is just a
request
to make those pictures smaller for posting. If someone needs more detail
they can ask for it.

Very condescending John. It is also easy for a poster to reduce the picture
size to one that is not problematic.

I agree that it is time to get modernized and use a internet connection
that is up to date.
Some of the cheap or free dial ups are clunky and not worth using when
there are options
today for _*almost*_ all to have faster internets.

Guys, I think it was the RV8 metal plenum photo's, my computer handled them
without any problem and the photo's were great. Here's the deal, we all
have different providers, some of them are really fast and some are really
slow....., but I was happy to get all the great photo's. The RV builder did
say; "I hope this file is not too big." Just my 2 cents.

Ron,
Doesn't your e-mail software have an option to "ignore e-mails larger than xxx kB" or "download only headers larger than xxkBytes"? I you used that then you would avoid having to expect the rest of the world to lower their e-mail standards to fit your personal needs.

Why not just upload the large images to one of the free photo hosting
sites and put the URL in the email?????

A few points.
I loved PowerToys as a simple right click image resizing tool but when I
"upgraded" to Vista PowerToys was not compatible. Based on this
conversation I just installed VSO Image Resizer and will give that a try
for quick resizings. It seems to work OK but not as ultra simple as
PowerToys. On a side note I did shortly thereafter make a webpage to
display my items for sale but they sold so quickly that few people saw
the page. www.painttheweb.com/rv-8a/cowl

It is likely most of us are pretty well gagged with too much info on
this minor problem.
I expect Matt can and will make an adjustment to the ground rules if
warranted.
Let's all go to our corners and take a break.

I am sympathetic to the issues caused by dial-up, having spent too
many years on that service. But, now that Matt is allowing
attachments on his e-mail lists, it is a fact of life that some of
those attachments are going to be larger than a dial-up user will
want. It isn't reasonable to expect that every user will manage to
remember to think of the poor dial-up users every time.
Just complaining on the list is not going to do the job, as there is
zero chance you will change everyone's behaviour. If you want to
solve the problem for good, you'll need to do it yourself, rather than
depending on other people to solve your problem for you. Most e-mail
programs have options that allow the user to specify a maximum
attachment size that will be downloaded. If you really want to solve
this problem, and your e-mail client doesn't have this option, maybe
it is time to switch to another e-mail program.

I have to say I am quite surprised by the responses on this list. Photos
are not really enhanced by a resolution over about 76 when passed around in
email or posted on the web. I have high speed Internet but still don't see
any point in consuming my bandwidth or all the shared bandwidth for large
photos. I get a bit annoyed when sitting in an airport connected to my
blackberry on a slow connection trying to get a work email and then somebody
sends a 8Meg photo in a joke while I have to stop and change my email
settings, or log in via a web page to go get rid of it first.
Just because your car goes 120 mph doesn't make it OK to do so. Really we
should all get a bit more educated about the technology and not just assume
because a huge file fits it is the right thing to do and the few who can't
are in the wrong. We have at least some obligation to be realistic about
what we are doing. The software to fix the issue is readily available for
free. I take all my photos in high resolution in the event I want to print
them, but resize everything before posting on the Net.
Sorry, I never rant on this list and don't like it, but like I said the
responses have surprised me a bit.
