As I was the instigator of the cold starting thread, I am pleased to report that I seem to have solved the problem following suggestions made by several contributors. I have fitted a start button in addition to the key switch so that I can now start on one mag. I also replaced my six year old gel battery, even though it was still showing 12.5 volts, with a shiny new Odyssey. Now I turn the prop through a number of blades until the oil gurgles then start on one mag. Engine starts instantly with no kick back.

Thanks for all the feed back.

Richard

You can actually hear the oil gurgle!
Or do you see pressure come up on the oil pressure gauge?

Bob,

The gurgle is from "burping" the engine. You are supposed to ensure the "mags" are off, take the top off the oil reservoir and turn the engine through by hand until you hear the distinct gurgle in the oil reservoir. This indicates that all the oil has been blown out of the crankcase and into the oil reservoir. Now you can properly check the oil level. On my Europa, there can be half a quart (half a liter) of oil in the crankcase. If you were to check the oil level without "burping" the engine, you may see the oil level as low when it really isn't. You add a quart (liter) of oil and now you are half a quart (liter) over-filled. Which after your flight will now reside across the bottom of your aircraft.

Yes, I take the top off the oil reservoir and can hear the gurgle OK.

(Sheepishly) I was asleep and forgot you were pulling it over by hand!

Thank you for the polite reply!
