				Hello group,

As part orf my 601 renovation project, I want to replace the lower nose wheel fork bearing with the newer style 601 XL plastic bloc. I would like to know what material is mandated (delrin, nylon, acetal, UHMWE?) and what is the thickness.

  Thanks!

  Michel

      Hi guys,
I’ve had a few people ask about a drawing for the inspection panels I use on my 601HDS.
The link below will get you to the drawing on my site and clicking the drawing at the bottom
of the page will get you to a larger image that’s printable. The panels serve my plane well
and have never given any difficulty.  If you want to make a set of these, the drawing is
  a good guide.

				Hi Michael,

I'm not sure whether mine is the old or new stuff, but I think it is Nyloil -- oil impregnated nylon.

Nyoil 1.5" thick is what I used. I think that's what the print called for also.

I just tuned in to the thread, and I hate to say this, but every
installation I've seen was .5" thick, not 1.5". No wonder the raw
 material was so expensive, Mike.
Ron, if your prints call for 1.5", they're wrong. I have Larry
Mac's beefed up (reinforcement ridge on the outboard side) bearings and
I estimate they can be machined out of 3/4" material. I'd say the
factory bearings could be made using a 3x6" piece of 1/2" stock.

                                                      Bill

I bet the tolerance on the groove depth is greater than 0.004! Oh! just turn on the metric on your calipers and make it to the print.

The question is do you want to match the XL dimensions or the ones of the
aluminum parts on the 701. The geometry on the 601XL is definitely beefier.
You can't make it as wide on the 701 because the vertical U channel is
narrower. And the depth of the v-grove is set by the existing parts: nose
gear tube (and its cross tube), distance from the bottom support plate to
 the top gear bearing, etc.

On my fourth-hand 701 kit I cut down the 601XL part to fit the specifics of
 my plane.

I don't think that the 601 part will fit the 701. I looked at my hangar buddies 601 and it is quite a lot different than the 701 arrangement. I was just going to make narrow blocks that fit inside the 701 brackets but are about 0.030 higher than the angles on the 701 parts.

That was a joke... did not notice the ?

An inspector told me that a plane is a collection of twisted parts that if well made, can fly straight...

I bet the tolerance on the groove depth is greater than 0.004! Oh! just turn on the metric on your calipers and make it to the print.

Certainly not because the original specs mandate only the aluminum plate as a bearing.

One thing i foud in the datasheet for Nyloil is that we must include a clearance ("shaft allowance") to prevent what you mention. Since that bearing does not really "work", i plan for less allowance than mandated (.003 or .004 instead of .009). I m sure that with Nylon 6, the clearance would be even more critical.

				Hi,

When we built our 601HDS 15 years ago, the bearings for nose gear
and landing gear were specified to be aluminum. Instead, we made
 bearings out of Delrin.

Even with that change, we noticed rather soon that the dirt and
sand collecting on the nose gear was wearing not only the Delrin
but also the gear tube. To prevent further damage and reduce
the drag produced by the tube, we made a rather simple nose gear fairing,
 see

 http://utdallas.edu/~klaus/Airplane/nose_gear_fairing.html

Each year, we remove the fairing during the annual
inspection, clean the tube, add grease, and reinstall
the fairing. That process has eliminated the wear of
 the tube and the bearing.

BTW, the 912 Rotax engine has passed 1400 hours,
without any sign of wear except that we have used
four (!) fuel pumps. Let's hope that the new pump design works.

 Happy flying,

 Klaus

How long have your 601 been flying?  It is good to read about good longevity for our aircraft...
