Bob is correct in his statement.. there is a huge learning curve and much work and risk involved with buying this stuff overseas and now our own government has made it substantially more difficult.
Also, these parts are not being manufactured any longer and what is over there is getting thin and difficult to find. Much of the viable parts are in Russia. Trying doing business in Russia! A risky venture at best!
I have a 40 foot container that arrives in port next week loaded with this stuff and I have been working on bringing this container into the US for exactly ONE year.
New Requirements on both sides of the border: Foreign Government Forms and Approvals and Fees, US Government Applications, Forms, Approvals, Taxes and Duties.
You now have to set up a US Corporation to meet Homeland Security requirements just to get the ball rolling, buy a bond, get pre authorization, FedEx documentation overseas, receive documentation from overseas and pay fees up front. It adds up in a hurry!
And the cost of flying commercially overseas to buy the stuff and then subsequent trip(s) to work out snags with the deal...
Oh and don't forget to get a Visa before you travel. Hotels, transportation, local guide/translator.... Even the hookers aren't cheap anymore.. Just kidding about the hookers.
Once you wire your money off it's GONE! You will have a LARGE amount of Money at risk, up front, for months on end, and then you never know what is really going to show up in the container until it gets to you, IF it actually ever gets shipped to you.
Also, you WILL end up with some less than desirable parts mixed in. So you get the "good, bad and ugly" in your container and so that factors into the overall cost. Just ask Bob, Pete and Greg. We've had to divide up the "less than desirable parts" on past shipments!
Also, the cost of the parts in Russia isn't a bargain to start with, so, if you can find parts already in the US, they are CHEAP compared to the overall risk, cost, hassle and wait of trying to buy it overseas.

We are fortunate that importing historically has been easier than exporting for us here in USA. Neither is easy or for amateurs. The next time you wish to buy a part for your L-29, Yak or whatever, think what that person went through to be able to provide that part.
I don’t think it is any surprise to a lot of us, that these new laws and procedures initiated under the umbrellas of security are slowly eroding are freedoms and rights with regard to these airplanes. Go fly it and enjoy while you can !
