Re-sealed my fuel cell this spring. Used a product sold by Aircraft Spruce used by several other kit manufacturers that I identified as a high quality cement paint.
Painted a couple pieces of panel and put them in a jar of mogas that had 10% ethanol. See attached photos of those pieces.
Layer of paint, though buckled and detached from panel does not seem to have begun to dissolve per se. It is still hard.
Panels not damaged except that the foam core has begun to be saturated with gas.
Examination of coating in fuel cell as far as my fingers can reach the coating through the fill port finds no bubbling of the paint. Nor can I see any with a flash light.
I hope/suspect that the coating will do its job as long as no gas gets between it and the panel/sides of the fuel cell it is painted on.

Dan,
The product is "Rhino 9700". My understanding is that Rhino bought out Jeffco, Aircraft Spruce, in the latest catalog I have, 2012-13, still lists the product as Jeffco 9700.
AS sells it in three gallon .amounts for $544.00 - - - last catalog I have.
Lancair sells it in one gallon amounts for $140.00. www.lancair.com still calls it Jeffco. I bought a gallon from them and when it came the label on the cans was "Rhino 9700".
Last spring I found a spec sheet for it. Can't locate it again. Hope you have better luck.
I only used half mine. You don't by any chance live near Washington, DC do you ? ? ?

Bernie, How did you apply the 9700? I think my leak is down close to the wing root and short of dumping in a gallon and hoping it covers all the end of the fuel cell while the wing is vertical, was wondering how you sealed the tank? How did you keep the 9700 out of the fuel line? Bert

Burt,
I pulled the wings, took the end plate off the fuel cell, attached a three inch paint roller to the end of a broom stick and went at it.
Could not visually see how good a coverage I was getting but found that my small Cannon digital camera took good close-up pictures of the inside of the fuel cell. I put the photos on my computer and blew them up. This gave me a good view. Put on two coats plus innumeral touch-ups to catch the missed spots.
Put the end plates back on, used a polysulfide sealer and for the first time since the plane was first flown in 2000, the end plates didn't weep.
On re-attaching my end plates I discovered that all along I had two sizes of "T" nuts. Way back in 1997 when I built the wing I didn't notice that Aero Designs put two sizes on "T" nuts in the same envelop and I indiscriminetly used both sizes for attach nuts for the end plate. I used cap screws of the correct size for the smaller "T" nuts. Thus where I had the larger "T" nuts I didn't get a strong draw down.
I still have a mixture of small and large "T" nuts in the wing but this time a matched the correct size cap screw to the "T" nuts. Took me14 years to get this right.

Bert,
The 9700 is not the sort of stuff that you can dump in and slosh around. It is a two pot compound that will quickly exotherm if mixed in too large a quantity. It is also quite a thick consistency and is best applied with a short bristle or foam roller.
I think that you need to remove the wing endplates to see where the problem is exactly. I know it is a bit of a pain, but having done it once it is really no big deal. A single sided razor blade can be used to cut through the end plate sealant [or a Stanley knife], carefully piece by piece. The important part is using the correct sealant to reseal it when you re-assemble everything. Clean everything up and look in particular for any leakage between the short piece of aluminium angle and the spar. I had to do this a little time back to replace my capacitance senders.
The original Jeffco coating, done about 1998 or 99 [15 years ago] was still in excellent condition. Barely any discolouration, no evidence of any delamination. I was pretty happy about that. Also no sign of leakage anywhere.
I have used mogas almost exclusively, but it is available here with no ethanol. There are a variety of other additives in the fuel of corse, but it has caused no damage.
