Many moons ago someone posted a door strut mechanism that removed all of the spring strut force from the door when it was closed. Does anyone have a link or drawing of the design?

Regards

I think I know the one you mean and have a copy but no access to my computer where it's stored.
I'll pass it on later.

Brian - here’s what I’ve got relating to Ted Gladstone’s design.
The sketches came from Gerry Cole who wrote:

Quote:
I attach my sketch of the upper pivot bracket as requested, which may be useful for Europa’s mod. I’ve just had a good look round to see if I had a copy of Teds drawing but without success. However I did find my drawing of the lower pivot point machining needed to position the bottom end of the gas strut correctly within the stay. I’ll attach this in a second email since today Photo Gallery wants to put everything in a cloud if I try to attach both. Should you want to go with Ted’s mod he may not mind you contacting him – he may still be in the LAA Edinburgh strut. I have his address as 19 Southfield Gardens East, Edinburgh EH15 QN, Tel No 0131 669 7255. He shares (shared?) Europa G-ZTED with Justin Kennedy which has a number of Ted’s clever mods.

And now I’ve discovered another thread from 2014 which points to:

http://www.theeuropaclub.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/G-ZTED-Strut-Mod.pdf

So we should have looked on the Europa Club website first!

Gents, in case its useful, a couple of pics of the gas strut mechanism including one of it installed on G-YETI - which is/was Gerry Cole's Kit 121. I am also in receipt of recent correspondence from Andy Draper about it who advises it
can be considered a 'Trivial' MOD on the basis that the function of the
strut is unchanged.
Regards,

Clive

Clive,
Care to share the critical dimensions? i.e. the centre-to-centre distances between the three pivots; assuming the standard shorter plastic ball ends have been used?
Rgds.,

Gents, in case its useful a pic of the gas strut mechanism installed on kit 121 (which i now own and is registered as G-YETI). I am also in receipt of recent correspondence from Andy Draper who accepts this as 'Trivial' on the basis that the function of the strut is unchanged by this MOD. Regards, Clive

Duncan, certainly:

Centres between upper/door attachment end and hinge is 227mm
Centres between lower/fuselage arm attachment end and hinge is 240mm
Lower arm attachment and the rod end of the gas strut share the same location
Other/thicker end of the gas strut is placed 38mm from the hinge centre on the upper/door arm
The upper arm is made from 3mm thick 7/8 inch alu angle and the lower arm from same dimension except thinner 2mm thick alu angle. There is a fair bit of shaping to do of the angle surface edges to package and enclose the strut - which connects using the supplied screw-in 'ball' fittings

Do also bear in mind that the strut mechanisms are 'handed' per side

Actually (and complete credit should go to Gerry Cole for this) i have a pattern/mockup mechanism as image below. If the Europa Club would like to put it on their 'inventory' of useful stuff/tools, i would be happy to donate it.

In the first instance though i will be posting it to Roger Lloyd - who got there first!

Hope it helps
Clive

Number four. Installed and connected to a open door. ( I see that the door was not fully open in this shot – the one behind is fully open. It is important to get the stops on the stay middle pivot just right so that the gas strut does not foul the lower half of the stay.
