Looking to longer term servicing I have been costing the rubber connectors which connect the carbs to the manifolds on the Rotax engines. In the UK these are an extortionate price of about 50UK pounds each. I checked the price in France and they were still about 50 Euros each. I recently spoke to the owner of a Banbi (which also uses the Rotax) and he says that these parts can be obtained much cheaper from BMW as they are used with Bing carbs on BMW motorcycles. He also said that the rubber diaphragms within the carbs are also much cheaper from BMW. Has anyone else got any suggestions on this?

Hi Nigel,
Certainly sounds right, BMW motorcycles always used Bing Carbs.

We changed ours about 6 months ago - I read an article about how someones
split due to ageing - the split put the carbs way out of balance and it could
have got pretty nasty. Lockwood in the US recommend (from memory) and absolute
maximum service life of 5 years.
I looked around because, as you say, they're really expensive over here -
you can get them cheaper in the US but you can't buy directly as Rotax limit
where dealers are allowed to send good. By the time they've been posted to
a friendly rotax user in the US and then posted on with the risk of the tax
man putting his hand out on the way into the country, it just wasn't worth
it - we just paid skydrive the silly amount of money (about 45gbp each plus
the vat mans share) and they were here next day - really didn't seem worth
lots of effort to save £20 or so.

See the ad on page 15 of the latest "Loop" Aerosport are selling them for £23.38 (ex vat I assume). There is no mention of any rotax parts on their website though.

Watch Ebay. Someone sells a version of the conectors for $39US. Look like they are better quality than the much higher priced Rotax part.

The Rotax manual recommends replacement of all rubber components at 5 years.
Mandatory on the certified version.

Hi Duncan
The lockwood article was pretty strong in its recommendation to change them
at 5 year intervals - especially the older types (like the ones we had)
which don't have the sleeve over the tightening screw to prevent you from
over tightening it. If you do this, it weakens the wall - If this cracks,
you could loose all power from one side of the engine while the other side
is generating full power - sounds like a good way to rip the engine from the
mount and subsequent total loss of control - therefore sounded like £100
well spent as our engine is about 8 years + old and sat most of that time in
unused.
Changing all rubber parts - carb sockets, oil hoses, water hoses and fuel
hoses cost us about £250 - do that every 5 years and you're looking at £1 a
week.
exclusive distribution rights in the UK which can only be good news (except
for skydrive!).

It turns out that price is for another type of carb. The Rotax Bing carb rubbers are £41.26 incl VAT.

I would think that, at a conservative estimate, the cost of production of the Rotax Bing Carburretor rubbers are about 80p each. Who is being ripped off?

You may think they're expensive but be warned.......
The Rotax 'official' oil and water hose are each about £17 per metre - I
thought this was a ridiculous price when we changed all of the hoses on
G-MFHI.
However....... I recently changed the water hoses on my Kit Car (can't get
enough fibreglass!) using hose from the local motor factor. About 10 hours
later, I arrived home and as I was putting the car into the garage, one of
the new hoses split clean open for about 2 inches along its length dumping
all of the coolant onto the floor!!! (imagine if this was your Rotax!!!!)
I guess the message here is - if you buy Rotax parts, you've a much better
idea that the parts you're buying have come though a prescriptive inspection
and test process - if you nip to the motor factors for your parts and there
is problem, the insurance company may well ask a few awkward questions.

Actually, the 1/2" water hose on the Rotax is 'standard' car heater stuff!
The oil hose isn't; it's Kevlar reinforced with a high temperature rating,
but available through non-Rotax sources at about the same price as Rotax.
