Good Lord, you guys must be filling the wings with helium! These low
weights have got to be with the 6 gallon tanks, right? What else
makes these planes so light compared to the IV's? Jeez, if my ex-
wives climbed on your scales we might still be married.

I believe you made that same remark when I told you my IV-1050 weighed only 575 with a subaru on front, but it is a fact. Now that I have added the farings for the struts and landing gear, it is about 585.

What makes the 1s and 2s and 3s so light is thiner spars, fewer ribs,
light fabric, thinner and smaller diameter struts, simple, light
engines, single fuselage fuel tank, or smaller wing tanks, minimal
instrumentation, no amenities such as cabin heat, insulation, baggage
storage, etc. In other words the least amount of materials were used to
make a safe airplane with an enclosed cabin. If it wasn't necessary for
flight and minimal comfort it isn't on the airplane. And that's why a
503 powered Model II or a B Model Avid with minimal equipment and paint
can get off in under 100 feet and climb like a bat. Each succeding
Model gained horsepower, comfort, and weight, lots of weight. Of course
most builders seem to have to improve things, which almost always means
adding weight, often lots of weight which results in some fat Model 2s
and 3s. Glenn's model II weighs almost as much as my Avid MK IV STOL
(547lbs). I still think the earlier Avids and Kitfoxes when built
light are the most fun of the litter.

I have starter battery 13 gallon wing tank 10 gallon nose tank nav strobe lights full instruments with lighting and heater insulation all the comforts of home and she is only 467 empty . The secret is in the finishing of the fabric . Use minumum amounts of silver and paint and you will have a lite weight bird.

Hi Glenn.

My Model 2 is also a little heavy at 535# per the AW certificate. Since initial wt and balance calcs, I've added a cargo pod and a few other odds and ends. I'm guessing it's about 550 now.

Watch your ounces when building, save the pounds. I used every suggested weight saving in the manual except drilling holes in the brake rotors.
Model III, 582 = 439.5 pounds empty.
This helps make up for the pilots lack of exercise and weight conditioning.
Also give a useful load of 660 pounds.

The W&B data sheet for my KF2 SN89 shows 461 lbs. as the empty
weight. Of course, when I am through rebuilding it, I will have to
redo the Weight and Balance.
