My air scoop intake cover screen could stand to be replaced... and before
I just go off to Home Depot and get some generic screen door material, I
thought I'd ask here if there's any wisdom/suggestions/knowledge I need to
have before doing this??
Thanks,
Jon

A friend of mine has this super simple but seemingly effective foam cover which fits over the stock CJ air screen. If your unit is structurally sound you could just fit this over it and be done. I'll ask him and post since I've been meaning to buy one for my airplane. Nothing worse than changing your oil and finding grass seed in there.

Like all things Yak there are a ton of opinions, mine is that you should tread carefully with foam sock type filters, at best they do rob you of a inch or so of MP, at the worst they can wad up and cause you big problems, Barry Hancock reports that his foam filter recently restricted the airflow so badly that the engine shut down on takeoff. Don't know the particulars in his case, but I personally wont use them.

Do you know what brand he was using? My buddy, here has had no issues what so ever. My concern is that the stock filter box is great at filtering out rocks and boulders but nothing much smaller. I consistently find grass seed in my oil when I change it. If seeds can get by, then most certainly sand is getting in there also. Since I havent got a spin on oil filter I''ve been changing my oil every 15 hours or so, to be on the safe side.

If you are getting grass seeds in the oil, you need to place a filter over the two pressure vents on top of the engine. But you are right. Sand will pose a problem with the screen/cheese grater filter. I took the screen filter off my plane and placed two foam tube filters at the rear of the intake structure. They become active in the Aux position. In the air at cruise speed I get the full ram affect, and on the ground I get clean air to the engine. But the foam has a problem if the engine backfires. It tends to burn. The heat from the exhaust does not bother the foam. So if I can be sure that it won't backfire, then its no problem. I'm looking for something like a K&N filter. But until then the foam will do the job.

Try:

You will have to call them and tell them what type aircraft and size screen
you have. Most the DVT guys use them.
