It's hard to imagine the terms "investment" and "home-built" in the
same sentence. Smile

I'm sure everyone has heard the old saw, "You know how to make a
small fortune in the aviation industry? Start with a large one!"

Now that was funny and I hope Steve sees the humor in it. But I would add,
lets all keep it light and quit arguing the issue. We should like each
other for the sport we enjoy. I contend the whole FAA approach is just
plain stupid and that that should be the issue here--not what Steve is doing
or not doing. And Steve, don't say something hurtful that will turn your
allies away.

The FAA's possible interpretation as stated by EAA is like making sense out
of non sense. For those who don't agree with Steve, as the musical Can Can
says, "So What, So What." What's it to you. And Steve, don't talk about it
so much. The last thing you need is to draw attention from that one FAA
enforcer that thinks it matters a dam and that you are wrong. Go do your
thing and I for one will quietly cheer from behind the hangar. We should
all cheer for the pilot, not for some stupid, ill thought out rule
interpretation that is non sense.

I will try to make this my last posting on the subject.

Mike,

That was classic! It will definitely go down as one of the most humorous posts I have read on an aviation website! Nice job!

Speaking of resale value, I just walked in from the shop to try to convince my 5 year old that by 10:45 he should be asleep. I am in the process of wiring my panel and I can guarantee that I will never come close to getting out of my Fox what I have in it...I will be lucky to get 50 - 60%. I guess it would be nice for the resale values of our Kitfoxes to increase but I don't loose to much sleep over it. I don't plan on selling mine.

Kitfox resale value is really kind of strange when you think about it.

How many competitive airplanes can do this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=513UTHqoZBc (I don't recall ever seeing another LSA type airplane doing something so impressive or spectacular - especially only on 80 hp!)

How many of the competive airplanes (that sell for more typically) have a folding wing feature? (oh yeah, one that REALLY works) That alone in my mind should be a huge selling feature adding value to the Kitfox.

How many competitive airplanes will lift their own empty weight? (providing one of the best useful loads in it's class) A Light Kitfox will lift more than it's empty weight.

How many competitve airplanes have the option of being either a tailwheel airplane or a tri gear?

How many of the competitive airplanes have so many proven engine options as the Kitfox does?

How many of the competitive airplanes have a flight envelope, that is so impressive?

How many of the competitive airplanes have the classic looks with the graceful lines the Kitfox does?

How many of the competitive airplanes have the range/fuel capacity the Kitfox has?

How many of the competitve airplanes have the ever so sweet and nimble handling the Kitfox has?

How many of the competitive airplanes have the option of slide-in wing extension allowing you in less than half an hour to convert your cross country cruiser into a super stol machine?

(And I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of things....)

In spite of having hands down the most versatile (and fun) airplane out there, I agree our Kitfoxes are hugely undervalued. But for savvy buyers, that makes them truly "the bargain and performance sleeper" of all the Light Sport type aircraft available.

But, I suspect we are more or less at the end of those good ol' days prices, as I'm sure any of you that watch the used Kitfox (and Avid) markets have already noticed, our supply for used airplanes is beginning to dry up. And since it is all about supply and demand, that means the vaule of our planes will start climbing.

For any of you that want to do something to improve our Kitfoxes value, just give other pilots and enthusisasts rides in yours. That always seems to impress even the worst skeptics. Or just show people what your airplane can do by flying it more where others see it. Show them the stol characteristics. Fold a wing back when theres a crowd around. Show them just how neat of an airplane the Kitfox is. And while you are helping to reestablish the values of our planes, you will most likely also be helping John and Debra sell new Kitfoxes, keeping the company strong. And that's good for all of us!

Just my two cents worth on the subject...

I don't know, Paul, I haven't been flying very much other planes than
my Kitfox. What I know, though, is that the market here is changing for
the carbon-fibre water-drop speed machines. My former instructor just
bought a WT-9 Dynamic. See the link:
http://web.lightsportaviation.se/index.php?
option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1&lang=en
Next summer, he intends to fly Norway-Spain non-stop in ten hours. He
flies about twice as fast as me in my Kitfox. Speed seems to be the
argument here. I have seen this in my long experience with sailing and
yachting in general: The search for the extra knot of speed. But why?
Either the pleasure is to get there (on the water or in the air) or to
be there. If the latter then why not fly an airliner? It's surely
faster!

I love my Kitfox because ... it feels safe, simple and ... it's mine. I
have seen women prettier than my wife but I won't change wife for that.
I am fortunate to be happy with what I have. There is nothing I am
missing with my Kitfox.

Cheers,

Michel,
Interesting enough, speed is all the rage here amongst the
Kitfox community; lots of work on drag reduction and increased
horsepower. It's unfortunate since I'm guessing it's only a matter of
time before some start trading their Kitfoxes in for the fast-glass machines.

I understand, Guy. Indeed, it may sound silly to use extra fuel to push
a draggy object through the air.

When I decided to get a pilot license then buy an aircraft, I had no
prior knowledge of aviation apart from my father, the airman of my
childhood. To me, it made sense (and still does!) that a recreational
aircraft must be simple and reliable. We have a Rutan Defiant, here at
our airfield. Nice plane; but not my cup of tea. My Kitfox taildragger
with a air-cooled boxer Jabiru is ancient and well-proven technology.
For the pleasure of being up there, feeling free like a bird, I don't
need anything more.

I think there will always be a market for that kind of aircraft; just
as people will continue to sail, ski, horse ride or use
radio-telegraphy; anachronisms certainly, but enjoyable ones. It will
be a smaller market, though, but a nice one.

Cheers,
