Hi,
I am using the new AEROSHELL SPORT Plus 4, a semi-synthetic blend approved
by Rotax available to us in the US and Canada.
I am interested from membership if anyone is going with the ROTAX
recommended 100 hour interval change for this or any similar
semi-synthetic oils? This would be for exclusive Mogas use - no LL100!
I used it 25 hours for initial new engine run (912ULS), I plan the next
change at 75 hrs (100TT) to flush out more debris and then go for 100 hr
intervals.

Hi,
It is time for an oil change again. However, the oil I always used is
no longer available.
The oil I used was Shell Advance VSX 4T. This was a Rotax approved
oil, suitable for leaded and unleaded fuel. There is a replacement for
this oil, the Shell Advance AX7, but I'm not sure whether this is just
a name change or a formula change.
So, what kind of oil are the rest of us using? Any recommendations?
Anyone who kan tell me whether the Advance AX7 is just a name change?
Frans

Hello everyone,
At about 800 hours my 914 developed a crank case leak from fretting. I
sent the engine into Leading Edge and they split the case and fortunately
they were able to repair the fretting and successfully seal it.
While the engine was apart they cleaned up and it was noted that there was
some "oil flashing" on the piston skirts. They recommend for 914's to only
use a full synthetic as they tend to run a bit hotter.
Since then I have used Mobile 1 and unleaded fuel. If I make a cross
country trip and can only find 100LL then I do an oil change as soon as I
return.

Chris,
We have been using Aeroshell Sport Plus 4 oil in our 914 since it became available. The class at LEAF suggested it since Rotax has tested it & has an agreement with Aeroshell that no changes will occur to the formulation without notice to Rotax. Any other oil, the formula can be changed by the manufacturer.
The maint manual says it is necessary to change every 100 hours when running MOGAS (no more than 30% avgas) but recommended to change every 50 hours.
We change every 50 hours and send it out for anaylsis. We have 500 hours on the engine and the analysis has been good every time. Our 914 installation runs oil temp around 190 to 200 deg F and we run MOGAS more than 90% of the time. We always use Decalin when we have to use 100LL and even with that the lead sludge in the oil tank is a lot.

Hi Jim,
I noticed you send your oil out for analysis. I have done so too.
However, Rotax provides no guidance I can find regarding normal limits
for the analysis components and the oil analysis company is clueless
about Rotax engines as well.
So, my question is: what do you do with the data? Watch for trend changes? What do you do if see one since the metallurgy is so different than
Lycosaurus engines?
Cheers from Sunny (finally!) Georgia

Hi Ira,
We use Blackstone Labs and they have some accumulated data on Rotax engines. They provide a narrative based on their experience. So we watch trends and read their suggestions.
