The inverter for the front cockpit of my airplane had gone bad, so the previous owner moved the inverter for the rear cockpit to the front. But the front and back are 2 different inverters an SBL-40 (for the front) and the SBL-53 (for the rear). The only difference between the 2 according to the manual is the voltage tolerance, the SBL-40 is +/- 4% and the SBL-53 +/- 10%.
I'm assuming it's becuase the frot inverter needs to power both the AI, and the DG.
Here's my question, what's the problem with using a 53 for the front? Which is how I'm currently configured. The one that went bad was also a 53 so my plane basically had 2 53's front and back.

The -X in the inverters is basically their wattage. You can use the back one in the front.
Bud Forester at one time wanted to come up with a solid state inverter that could be housed in the mechanical inverter's shell. It was a good idea... Need to check back with him.

Hi Ernie;
I think you may have that backwards. The front inverter (behind the seat) is the SBL 53 which operates the front horizon and the complete gyro compass system. The SBL 40 (aft RH access panel) operates only the rear gyro horizon.

Contact Jim Bernier. He knows of someone who can repair the inverter. See Doug Sapp’s post of 30/04/14.

Ernie,About the inverters, no problems using a SBL53 in the front position, that's where is should be. Note that 53's are at least twice as hard to find than the 40's, more expensive too. Should you want/need a 40, I have them in stock.
About the light bulbs: I have them in stock.
Have a great 4th!

Is it a 36v 3 phase or the 115 volt 3 phase. I assume 400 Hz. These are a common inverter. I will look around. I had several years ago that we put in Yaks to save the weight.

Ernie;
Contact Jim Bernier. He knows of someone who can repair the inverter. See Doug Sapp’s post of 30/04/14.

Subject: Inverters

Good thread!
Walt
Have you managed to swap the original cj6's inverter internals for a lightweight modern alternative and keep them in the same housings?
What weight saving are we looking at here per unit?
