What is your experience with the solenoid on a Sky-Tec starter in your Glasair?

We just had our third failure in three years of the O'Reilly auto parts solenoid on our Sky-Tec starter. This time the winding on the elector-magnet must have failed. (The plunger wouldn't pull in. The starter spun, but wouldn't engage the gear.)

We've never had decent longevity with the Sky-Tec solenoid - had to replace them about every two years when buying direct from Sky-Tec. That was while flying about 200 hrs/yr, about every week.

I finally got tired of paying for that, and found the same solenoid at Checker/O'Reilly autoparts with a lifetime warranty. (BWD S5613.) Now we're down to 70 hrs/yr, flying every other week. But the solenoid is actually doing worse.

Are any of you experiencing this failure rate? Sky-Tec keeps blaming it on engine vibration. Maybe so, but I've balanced the prop to almost zero IPS. (We're running an narrow deck 320, if it matters.)

Is there another brand of solenoid out there that is more reliable, that still has a lifetime warranty? (This one is Borg-Warner, but like everything else nowadays, is made in China. That's gonna kill this country someday as everything comes grinding (literally) to a halt.)

Mike, I have 526 trouble free hours on my Sky Tech starter. I have my starter relay mounted on the engine compartment fire wall. And I mounted a starter relay diode to stop surges. ( the reason for the diode is as you turn off the starter switch you turn the starter into a generator). I ran a # 4 wire from the battery to the master relay and from there to the starter relay and from there to the starter solenoid and to ground. I was informed by a mechanic that the starter solenoid would over heat if I hadn't. After discovering a large amount of metal in my filter last December I decided to tear down my engine and discovered one of my cylinder pistons didn't match with a large enough weight difference that would have caused a significant vibration. Even with that, I haven't had any problems with my starter. As a side note, I learned the cause of the metal was from having an aluminum and steel oil pump gears that were eating themselves. The AD requiring the aluminum pump gear replaced by a steel gear was never done by the over haul shop. Now I have a badly scored crank shaft, cam and lifters that need to be replaced.
