Just to add a clarification for our friends overseas and reminder to our 'locals' regarding the foregoing excellent commentary on AD's, for U.S. Type Certificated Aircraft AD COMPLIANCE is mandatory. For EAB aircraft, the AD must be ADDRESSED. That bit of diction is the critical part.
Should something unfortunate yet utterly unrelated to the AD occur, you can still be ruined. Failure to address the AD has a technical / legal impact on your C of A, and the status of your C of A generally impacts your insurance in a negative way.
