I have added a trio to my RV-6 and ran a wire from the trio to the vicinity of the GPS (GX-60 with MX-20). The problem is my panel was wired up proffessionally on the bench and the wires are all neatly tied and it is real nice. I can't tell which wire is the one I am needing to cut and tie into. I really hate to cut this bundle all up.
I know which pin # it is on the GX-60 and on the MX-20. I do not have the confidence to tear into this. I hear people on this list talk about this like it is a simple thing. What do you all know that I don't? If I pull the radio out of it's box, would I be able to see the back and pull on a wire?

Tim,
I wired my avionics myself - and have an MX-20 and GX60 coupled to a S-Tec 30 AP via a GPSS steering module.
If it is like mine, the units slide in and out of their trays...you can't go to the 'in' side of the tray and get anything worth using. IIRC it's all sockets anyway. If you know which one is the correct one, it can be done fairly easily and the pins are a standard replacement sockets (I've got exact match spares in case...).
You'll most likely have to cut the wires in order to get the sockets out (the radio shack tool will allow you to pull them out).
The alternative is to send the stuff back to who wired it for you and have them wire in a set of hanging wires off of the correct places.
If you need more info / encouragement / pictures - contact me direct....

You need to get to the rear of the GX60 to remove the pin from the
connector. I had to cut into some of the ties holding my wires together to
get the the pin in the connector. I used a pin (contact) removal tool that
I purchased from Stein Air to remove contact #5 from the connector. I then
fabricated a "Y" adapter with male and female contacts to splice into the
wire. I have the connector contacts, and tools to do this. I had the wire
from GX60 Pin 5 to the SL30 and the wire from Pin 20 running from the GPS to
the AP. The GX60 will only allow one of the serial ports to be programed as
MAP. MAP is what is needed for the Trio AP.
My Trio worked with the GPS signal right out of the box on a test before I
did the calibrations.
If you were local, I would lend a hand. This is something that if you are
not familiar with wiring connectors, could be over your head.

Hi Gary, I wish you were local also as I am very intimidated by this. Here is the message I received from trio quite some time back.
>> from Chuck Busch at Trio
I just went through the installation manuals on the GX- 60 an MX-20 devices and verified the data formats and electrical interfaces.
My research indicates that the MX 20 and EZ Pilot need to share the same data line, serial port 1, which is on pin 5 of the 37 pin GX-60 connector. This pin will interface to the EZ Pilot pin 7. The common data return is pin 3. You do not have to connect the data return (GX 60 pin 3 to EZ Pilot pin 10) since the main power ground will provide this return path.
The MX-20 needs to have the serial port 1 TX format selected as "MovMap" with the extended moving map option activated. My evaluation of the data is that it wil be compatible with the EZ Pilot as the "extended" data is appended to the normal moving map data and the EZ Pilot will just discard this as irrevelant data.. If you currently have the MX-20 set up, you do not need to do anything else with the serial output format. You will, however, need to change the CDI scaling to "manual" and 5.00 NM scaling. The attached PDF details the steps to do this. <<
Is this in confirmation of how you hooked yours up? You mentioned hooking pin 20 to the auto pilot. Sounds like I need to obtain a tool to remove the pin. Ralph mentioned one from Radio Shack. Can either of you mention what it is called? I will obtain one. I had thought I could just locate the wire and cut it to splice into it with a solder and heat shrink splice. Sounded like from the comments above that they would just share this data.
Thanks both of you for your help
Tim
