Hello all,

New to the list - have been reading for several days to get the feel -
lots of great info / experience to draw from!

I am wondering if anyone has attempted to build in an aerial photo
window into the wing of a 601XL. I am thinking to make a cutout in
the lower skin within one of the wing locker compartments, insert a
plexiglass window and rig up a holder within the compartment for a
digital camera. Has anyone heard of a setup like this before?

Thanks,
Ron

I plan to do this but place the camera behind the right seat in my 601XL.
Like many my digital camera (Sony DSC-F717) has a real-time video output and
remote control. Using one of the small composite video monitors intended for
cars I can frame the shots before I take them. My camera is somewhat old but
I'll also be able to shoot short video clips.

I suspect I'll have to place a small lip upstream from the window to keep
oil etc off of it.

Hi Ron,

The conventional place for such an installation is in the fuselage
rather than the wing. Perhaps the baggage compartment would be a good choice.

Hi;
I have had good success taking still digital pics and video through the
tinted canopy. Both air to air and air to ground.

Ron,

You apparently want to take pictures of what you are flying OVER. While the
wing locker seems like a good, remote location, keep in mind that the bottom
of the wing is a high pressure area and you may want to design your looking
glass with that in mind. My first thought would be to keep the plexiglass on
the outside of the skin, with a mounting flange that covers the edges and
streamlines it somewhat.

A couple years ago someone posted a group of pictures detailing a "door" in
the bottom of the cockpit for flour bombing or something. I thought I saved
it, but can't find it immediately. Maybe someone else on the list has it. It
may have even been for camera mounting!

I am eventually planning on something like this to make a camera attachment:
