He certainly was, Noel. But so were all navigators until the end of the
17th century, when Harrison and his chronometer provided a mean to find
the longitude. Earlier navigators were simply keeping their vessel to a
known latitude, calculated from the north star or the sun's meridian,
until they met their destination. The practice was safe when sailing
for a large continent, like America or Europe. But not quite so when
finding e.g. an island in the Pacific.
