I am building my shopping list and sorting through the aluminum cut sheets
that I found on CH601.org.

These drawings show quite a few parts changed to .020 from the original,
plans speced, .016 thickness. The document states that this is a ZAC
approved change, but I cant find any proof of this in my documentation or
online.

Whats up?

Thanks,
Matt

I'm builing my Rudder and Horizontal Stab again because I wasn't happy with the way the .016 aluminum lay on the ribs. I've been really happy with the .025 on the rest of the fuselage, and asked Zenith about replaciong the .016 on the tail with it. Caleb at Zenith emailed back that this was no problem, and further, that the production 601's are using .020 and .025 in the tail for the same reason.
So. Long story short: It's ok to substitute. If it makes you feel better to hear it from Zenith, they're pretty fast at email responses.

Matt, many people do not wish to play with the .016 skins for many
reasons, the only place that may not be replaced is the hingless
aileron. When those layouts were done the plans had a lot of .016 stated
for skins now many of those have been replaced with .025. Go through
your plans and match up to the cutting layout. The 601XL has no .020 in
it's construction so all changes in the layout are supposed to be .016.
The choice is up to you the .020 is a 1/4 thicker then the .016 and
makes a nicer skin , not to mention a whole lot easier to work with. I
have personally talked with Chris Heintz on this issue and he feels it
only adds weight, but that comes from a master who can handle .016 and
never put a smilie in it.

Tom,

I was wondering how my parts are coming along. Was the rudder that I saw at your house when I visited .016 or .025? Are you making my rudder skin out of the .025 thickness as well?

Thanks,

Dan

Dan,
That was a question I forgot to ask you! I made it out of .025, but I can certainly re-cut out of .016 if you'd rather. I think you'll be much happier with the .025 from a workability standpoint though. The .016 isn't quite tinfoil, but it is really easy to put dents and smiles in it. You'll see what I mean when we put together your rudder.
The parts are coming along well. I've got much of the fuse done, with the exception of some of the larger skins. The tail is nearly complete, again with the exception of the horizontal tail skins and a few internal ribs. I'll give you a buzz sometime this week to set a time to build that rudder and pick upi the rest of the tail parts.
Were you able to attend the Antique Airplane Fly-In this last weekend? There were a couple of nice 601XLs there and an HDS too. All of them were flying the Dynon D10 (the smaller version). One XL was running the Jabiru engine (Beautiful!) and the other two were running Rotax engines. No Corvair unfortunately. It turned out to be a really nice fly-in.

Matt,

I made the updates to the original cutting sheets that are on CH601.org. Since I was planning to use .020 on my plane, I fax'ed ZAC with a list of the parts I intended to change, and they replied that it was OK to do so. I have the original fax in my documentation folder. I don't know how ZAC would feel about me publishing it online, so I only added a note to that effect in the layout sheet. Any builder that wants to do this substitution could e-mail or fax ZAC and get their official approval.

By the way, the layout is fairly conservative. If you use the Olfa knife cutting method, you can nest the parts quite a bit tighter than shown. I still have a long way to go, so I don't know yet just how much less material is needed.

I got a response back from Nick at ZAC on my query about the tail skin
thickness increase.

He said:
"You are right, some of the aircraft made at AMD and Zenar use .025" on the
skin. Unless you have another reason, I would suggest to stay with what is
shown in the drawings."

This tells me that we can do it if we want to, but I am going to go ahead
and stay with the 16. Mainly to keep the weight down. I will just have to
be very careful when handling it.

Thanks to everyone for their comments.
