Hi all,

I'm looking for some example of the Zenith CH-801 on floats. I've seen a couple of smaller pictures, but nothing with any detail. Of the photos I've seen, the 801 (and 701 for that matter) is set to a pretty high angle of attack on the float framework, and I wanted to do some more research on it.

ZAC references that Czech Aircraft Works makes straight and amphibious floats for the 801, but there's no reference to them on the CAW web site that I can see.

Does anyone have any details regarding floats on this aircraft?

Thanks and best regards,
Chris

Contact Danny or Zaneta at Skyshops. They are great people and very knowledgable about floats. Danny has tested and used many configurations. I saw the white 701 fly with floats... pretty impressive.

I think the floats manufactured by CZAW were part of
the license agreement that has just ended between
Zenair and CZAW. From what I've heard, CANZAC
(zodierocket AKA Mark Townsend) are taking over the
manufacture of the Zenair line of floats sometime in
the near future.

I checked their website yesterday and did not see very
much about floats. Just the "call for pricing" note
that has always been there. I'm sure once the details
are sorted out, we'll hear about it on this list.

Personally, I'm hoping plans will once again be
available for the Zenair floats. I think it would be
an enjoyable challenge to build a set. Maybe even
amphibs.

Chris

To my knowledge no one has put an 801 on floats.

I put my 801 on floats briefly this summer. I used the Full Lotus and Czech Aircraft Works instruction manual and drawings. The front attach points were behind the lower engine mount. The front attach points rotated around the bolts. After looking at the installation I saw too many single point failure places that were not beefy enough for me. I'm going to rethink it the attachment this winter. I think I will develop another attach point just in front of the doors. That should provide some redundancy.

I set the angle between the chord and the floats at 6 degrees. But I never even started the engine while it was on floats.

For the record, CZECH AIRCRAFT WORKS has developed its' own line of floats.
And we are expanding our float production in an attempt to keep up with
demand.

We have a completely new float and float installation package for the 701.
Combined with our new 701 cowl and firewall forward package our cruise on
amphib floats is 95-100 mph which is greater than many 701s without floats.

We have also introduced a new 1300 amphib float designed specifically for
the maximum gross weight the new LSA rule allows.

Hi Bill,

Are the manuals of which you spoke available in electronic form? I'd love to see how the manufacturers attach them to the airframe. Did you install the Full Lotus floats on your 801, or were you just using the manual as a reference?

Mounts rotating behind the bolts seems like a not-so-good thing. I envisioned a solid, one-piece unit (a "bar" if you will) that went across the entire firewall with attachment points on either end, allowing the entire airframe to support the load of the floats.

Of course, this is all speculation as I've never looked hard at the structural supports for floats on any plane, much less an 801 Smile

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Best regards,
Chris

Hi Chip,

Will you be manufacturing a float package for the CH-801?

Best regards,
Chris

We have no plans to make an 801 installation pkg.
