Subject: Ignition system
Date: Sat, 26 Aug 2006 15:04:09 +1000
HI Guys, I seem to have a real problem with the ignition CDI's on my NSI. I
have absolutely no spark at all and suspect that both black boxes have
finally succumbed to the salt water they were sitting in for several hours
when we had our unscheduled swim at Christmas time.. Has anyone ever
changed these CDI ignition systems to a conventional distributor and coil?.
I have heard that the traditional Subaru distributor can be retro fitted
with dual points. If this is correct it might be a sensible alternative for
me to consider due to the NSI replacement CDI's being no longer available.
My engine is the standard NSI EA 81 non turbo and there is still provision
on the engine to fit a distributor. Any comments would be appreciated as I
don't want to be out of the air for another 6 months. Im just starting to
have fun again. Thanks guys.
Regards
Graeme

I think I would look into an alternative electronic replacement. You
have the hardest part already mounted on the engine and that's the dual
pick up. Check with Electra motive, not sure on the spelling. You should
be able to adapt something. Hey will be fun to figure it out. Yes you
can go to a single ignition distributor, junk yard, after market
possible, pretty straight forward just get a service manual and you
should be in business. Not real crazy about just having one ignition
though, stuff happens. You can test the coil boxes with a pulse
generator to see if they failed. I think all the connectors are a real
suspect point to check first.

Thanks Rick, I'll explore my local wrecking yard if I cant get off the shelf
parts. The problem with subaru's is they just dont break down so unless one
has been totaled in a accident, you cant find one being wrecked anywhere. It
is an option Iv'e considered though. Thanks.
