Does anyone know the significance of the number stamped on the rear of the root tube on the Mark 3. Are they serial numbers? Are the numbers in series? Did they start at 1? What was the last one sold from Old Kolb in Pennsylvania?
Just curious

Mine was very close to being the last one, if not the last to come from
Phoenixville, Pa. I got the three airframe kits from Pa, but got the
enclosure and the motor mounts from New Kolb in Ky, so I was in the
transition. When I heard about the sale and transition, my first
reaction was to wonder how things were going to work out, but New Kolb
treated me good.
I bought it on March 14, 1995, all three kits, including the Sun-N'-Fun
promotion of all the ribs pre-built for the bargain price of $6,765.
(Airframe only, I already had an engine and instruments)
The number on the end of the root tube is M3-215.

They went a little longer than that. I couldn't remember for sure, but I do
know I got my kit from TOK, so dug out my sales invoice. It's dated
10-14-96 for Serial # M3-274. I went out with a flashlight just now, and
the number on the end of the root tube is M1124.
I've found the cause of my problems with the redrive, and have been fighting
for 1 1/2 weeks with a local machine shop to build a spacer the way "I" want
it........not the way they think they want to make it. "If" I can get that
idiot to trim it to fit tomorrow, I could have Vamoose started again this
weekend........but I won't bet on it. I go back to the guy for try #4
tomorrow. Unfortunately, he's the only game in town, and I've already paid
him $110.00 for the thing......before I realized it wouldn't work.
Grumble. Lar.

To add one more data point to this string: My Mark-III was purchased on Dec
1996 from Old Kolb (Pa.), and my serial number is M3-300. Do I win the
prize for having the last Kolb from Pennsylvania?

I found the invoice's from Kolb Aircraft, Inc Pheonixville, PA
Kit #1 was shipped from PA on September 08, 1997.
The invoice for Kit #2 and #3 was dated February 11, 1999
The invoice is even signed by Esther N. Kolb... WOW...
Does anyone remember when the keys to the company changed hands???

My Firestar II Kit Invoices are dated March 17, 1999. The root tube number is F1281. At the time, they told me it was the last Firestar produced in PA. I believe the root tube number is not the same as the serial number. I never did find out the serial number - wasn't on the invoice.

Don't know if my Mark III was the last, but it was close. M3-308 I had the pleasure of talking with Mrs. Esther and Dennis a few times.

The invoice date for my FireStar from Pennsylvania was Nov. 12, 1998.
The engine kit was purchased from TNK May 26, 2000.
I used the number stamped on the fuselage for the Aircraft Serial Number F1267.

This might be another interesting point of trivia to add to the database that was being kept with first flights etc...
