On both of the past 2 KF's I have had, a 4 and a  5, when the tanks are topped off the caps seep staining the wing with  gas. I have tried new caps but they still seep. Does anyone have a solution  for this ??

 Also what is good to clean the stain? I have tried  all kinds of cleaners.

There was someone that said a mixture of diet mountian dew and I think maybe baking soda. Sounds a bit strange but I never tried it.  This comment was made on this list.

 I have had the same problem even with the rubber  Mercedes gaskets.  I found a product called "Mean Green" which takes the  stain off effortlessly and which does not seem to damage the plane's  finish.  I bought it at a regional discount store (Dollar General), so I  have no idea of whether or not it's nationally distributed, nor can I tell you  offhand what the active ingredient is.

Over  the years, this subject has come up many times and the best cleaner mentioned  each time has been a little gasoline on a rag.  Clean the stain  with gasoline, then wipe it off and wash the surface with a little water. It  sounds counter-intuitive, but previous list members say it works  well.

 I have the same problem with my Classic IV. If you  use Simple Green full strength on a cloth and rub like you are spit polishing  shoes takes it off. I think what is happening is we are filling our tanks  too high. I think that the vent on the cap suctions some of it out. What I  did was empty my tanks until they were bone dry including the header. I then put  6 gallons of gas in and put a mark on a measuring stick. I then put in 2 gallon  increments until I had about 14 gallons showing on the stick (Including the  header). That placed the fuel when full about 1 1/2 inches below the filler  neck. I use my measuring stick religiously and a stop watch. I burn 4.5 gallons  at 4800 rpm and about 5.5 gallons at 5200 rpm. When I taxi in to visit someone  without re-fueling I hit the stop watch on the instrument panel. I always know  exactly how much fuel I have by fuel burn and the dip stick. Jeff Classic IV  912UL

I used a Mercedes gasket, part# 140-471-00-79 that Lowell Fitt steered me to.Works well. Simple Green works well, also.

Simple Green is great for removing stains, bugs, grease, etc.  However, let

me warn you.  That stuff is incredibly corrosive.  Spray a little on a

camlock and watch what happens to it in a couple days.  So if you decide to

use the stuff, just ensure you keep it away from metal parts, or give them a

good rinse when you're finished.

George,

            You may  have a vented cap with a Skystar added vent tube. Look at the underside of the  rim. Are there four shallow slots around the edge? If so, use something small to  let epoxy seep into the slots to form a seal. Worked for me.

Rotax put a note out on simple green, do not use.... it has caused engines

to quite when it has corroded the wires in the mag area.

I'll try to address the seepage problem, though others may have done so.  The cap as provided is 'layered" with the inside layer have two vents in addition to the pitot vent tube.  These vents access the outside via 4 crips in the circumference ov the inner layer. All six opening need to be sealed with RTV or other medium.  The replacement of the gasket with a Mercedes part and the above sealing have kept my wings stain free for the last 6 years.

The subject of gas stains keeps coming up every few years on this list.

In the past, several members have said that fresh gasoline on a rag will

remove the stains. They've said to wipe it on the stain, then wipe it

off while it is still wet. Then clean the fabric with water. This sounds

counter-intuitive, but it supposedly works, though I haven't tried it. 



In a similar situation, someone wrote on our office whiteboard with

permanent marker instead of a dry erase marker. Nothing would get it off

except tracing over the marks with a new permanent marker, then wiping

it off while it was still wet. Worked great. Kinda the same idea with

our gas stains.

 What is RTV?  By the way, I've tried using  gasoline on a rag to clean the stain off with no luck.  The Mean Green  which I've used, (and obviously the Simple Green as well) does a great  job.  Just be careful where you spray it, and rinse thoroughly as soon as  the stain is removed.

I use red thunder to clean my stains . it is a  biodegradable product and does not mar or leave any residue when waiped and  washed off leaves a perfect shine . also friendly to aluminum

 I have used it on the fuel stains after the stains  sitting for months and it takes them right off.

Silicon sealer but I wouldn't use it with gas. Proseal would be better IMHO.
