Hi Folks,
I have 210 hours on my Europa now and was merrily flying along minding my own business when the crowbar activated. I had this problem about this time last year and Bob Nuckols adjusted the crowbar to activate a little less sensitively which appeared to solve the problem.
I reset the circuit breaker and all seemed well for 20 seconds or so then the volt meter went from a normal 14 volts to a spike of 16 volts when the crowbar activated again.
The electrics are basically just powering the radio, transponder and electric turn and slip so not using much power.
I reset a couple more times but sooner or later the voltmeter will suddenly spike and the crowbar trips. I reset as I throttled back during descent and all was well for the rest of the flight.
I can only assume that the regulator is the problem. Has anyone else experienced problems with the Rotax regulator.
Any recommendations?
Regards,
Martin Tuck

Had a similar problem of spiking up to 16 volts at cruise throttle. Replaced the regulator and all has been well, currently at 385 hours. The problem occured at about the 200 hour time. Now I wonder about the 400 hour interval just ahead.

I did not take the top cowling off so have not inspected the regulator but from others who have e-mailed, 200 hours seems to be the lifespan. I think I'll go ahead and replace it.
Thanks for all the comments.

This seems to be useful evidence that the crowbar unit is doing a good job. Relying on spotting voltage spikes during flight and switching the generator off manually would probably mean that a substantial number of spikes occurred before anything was noticed. It also brings to your attention that maybe the regulator is not far away from failure.
As not all regulators fail around 200hrs it may be that some of us are working them nearer to their limits than others. There was a suggestion recently that keeping the average demand below 12 amps was good for regulator durability. I would also suggest that ensuring it receives adequate cooling air and perhaps giving it some vibration protection might help. Making sure the case is well earthed is another essential requirement.

I am talking about the late 70s and early 80s now. I had BMs (R100RS)
because the reliability issues with the 900ss and their bretheren put me
off.
When they went they went really well - as Mike the bike's victories in IoM
desmonstrate.
New dukes are a bit different - so my mate who has the latest whatever it is
now ? 916?? Tells me.

My '81 900, silver blue, most beautiful SSD that I could not make run in
the city for some reason- carb related- was not electrically challenged
and the last, an ST4 gobbling-continents-for-breakfast red growler,
always ran perfectly. I still dream of it at night, going 500 miles and
getting there and not want to get off it already and going for another
spin...and then I had a one pot 350 trial type that I had for too short
time. And when I hear one very occasionally, I get goosepimples...
Alex, kit 529, still working on getting an engine- after i get that
house built....

Ducati, the motorbike from which the voltage regulator for the Rotax comes.
