Nico,
I use a domestic 12 volt 50 watt Halogen lamp mounted in my monowheel fairing, which is light (in weight) and is very visible on approach, but does not give a narrow beam for landing at night. Available in most DIY stores.
Regards,
William

Hi Nico
Good luck getting a small enough light to stand up to the pounding of
the nose wheel. I used the new gas light and made a flange then bonded
it on and filled it out so the light is right above the air opening.
Its tight but work grest. Here is a picture if it comes through.
Regards,
Jeff

Jeff-

Who is the Manufacturer of the light and do you have any drawings? It looks like just what I should be doing.

Jim,
The light was purchased from Wicks Aircraft supply. The item number is
HIDL14. It has a ballast that I mounted on the side of the lower cowl.
It is a gas light so you will never burn it out and it only uses 2.5
amps. I just used it this evening at dusk and it really lights up the
runway. Of course the price lights up the wallet quite well but I
thought it was worth to keep from needing another alternator.
As far as drawings go... I'm sorry I cannot help you. All I did was cut
into the cowl to where the top of the light fit then continued to cut
until the whole light fit without touching the engine and without
coming out close to the prop. When I had it where I wanted it, I got
the clay out and started forming the flange you see. Put tape & release
agent on then laid up 4 ply's of bid over it. After curing I removed
the flange trimmed it up and used the green stuff to bond it back on
the lower cowl. After filling and sanding a few times it was one with
the cowl. I then made the horse shoe piece you see around the bottom of
the light to hold the bulb in place using the same process. Then I
laid in some 2 inch bid tapes, 4 ply's thick, behind the bulb to screw
it in to and hold it from the back. Which allowed adjustment of the
hight of the light. Sorry but with such a limit on my time I didn't do
much documentation or any drawings.
Just get the bulb and get out the clay and the rest will come to you. I
hope this helps.

Jeff

Nico

I have Hella Xenon-lights,
both landing and taxilights.

They are extremely powerfull,
long-life enough, vibration
resistant and take only 3A.
Also itīs size is reasonable,
the lenght is about 100 mm
and diameter about 50 mm
(you can purchase round or
square model if you like).
Of course they heavier than
those led-toys but less than
man can guess.

I have also Xenon-lights in my
cars and I have to note
there is now life w/o Xenon
any more. They are like sun
itself. I have three years
experience of them (in
car use).

Price of the one pair is about
600 - 1000 euros depending
where you buy.

Hi Ron

Sorry for delay - I was a week in
an archipelago having a camp school
with 23 about 11 years old kids,
among them my daughter Arla...

Landing light: it is installed through
light alloy air duct below prop. It
is looking up (7 degrees!) when on
the ground (monowheel!) but about
levelled when flying some day. High
voltage ballast has been installed on the
firewall front of the pilotīs legs. By the
way I fixed that Xenon by extraordinary
way. No bolts and nuts at all - only by
Sikaflex 221 adhesive sealant system
(I hardly can wait when my supervisor
will see it!). The distance to the silencer
is about 30 mm and I am little worried.
Maybe I have to put some heat barrier
between them.

Taxi light: it is installed on the co-pilot
side fire wall (yes - inside the cowlings!).
It is lurking through that extra Naca inlet
which locates stbd side, lower cowling
(I have no turbo so I hope it is extra for me!).
The ballast is fixed on the side stiffener of the
cooling air duct. When on the taxi position,
the hottest spot of that light beam is about
15 metres front of the plane.

I was there playing games with them last night
and really they were like sun itself - two of them.

I estimate those 35 W Xenons are equal like 500 W
halogen lights in my work shop. The light beam
reaches more than 100 m /300 feets. Still I can
keep my hand on the glass of the Xenon w/o burn,
it is almost cool.

Noise problem? I suppose you are talking about
radio problems or what? Honestly I do not know
yet, my radios has been tested before Xenons.
When connecting on the Xenons man can hear
quite a sexy sound for a while but not very long,
unfortunately.

I took some pics and let you know the link soon,
hope tomorrow.

My highly recommendation...

Regards, Raimo

For those of you with my polycarbonate wingtip lighting covers,

I've just spoken w/ Bill VonDane (at) www.creativair.com and he will have
a Xenon landing/taxi light option available in a couple of weeks as a
substitute for the Halogen bulbs in his units which allow a
combination of LED position lights, landing/taxi lights, and low
profile strobes, all of which will fit within the wingtip.
