Don't remember which issue, but have done it and really like it. The main
issue is getting the crack between the wingtip and the wing as small/tight
as possible. We had to put a couple of screws at the front of the wingtip,
but the hinge pins hold everything else, and then the pin takes a bend and
is held in by a hinge tab screwed into a nutplate in the little metal rib
that goes in the back of the wingtip. It works well. The way we did it was
to drill both halves of the hinge before cutting the flange off the wingtip,
then used the part we cut off as a shim to hold the hinge to the wing while
holding the surface of the wingtip flush with the wing skin. A metal shim
can also be used. It is fairly important not to cut the flange off the
wingtip before drilling the holes, in my opinion, because it can be fairly
hard to get the hinge spaced right.

Hope this helps.

Chris,
Info is in the second issue of 2005. Great article! Thought I might
do the same but don't think it will work well with the Archer nav antennas
in the tips. If you have a different opinion let me know.

super sweet. that's the article i was lookin fer. even better, since it's in color, has clickable pics, more of them, and i can stop lookin for my RVator that grew legs and ran away. Thanks Zack!

for John -
i'm doing the hinge wingtips for a couple reasons. it looks way cleaner and doesn't chip paint installing and removing screws (as long as i don't accidentally bash the tips into the wings putting them on and off). in my wingtips, i'm installing the usual suspects. a Bob Archer nav antenna in one, possibly a com antenna in the other, and i've got strobes and nav lights to go in there. also, it's a good way to tinker with the duckworks HIDs that are in the last bay in both wings, and also i have an AOA in there. sounds like a lot of poop in there, and it is. i can't imagine that it'll all just work the first time out, and forever thereafter! Like to have easy(ier) access.

I think it works great with the NAV antenna in the tip. For the NAV antenna
installation, I connected the antenna to a piece of aluminum angle and the
angle to the end rib, instead of making it removeable with the wingtip. I
saw this done on somebody's site and thought it looked like a good idea.

Hey Jesse -

Do you have a pic of that installation? I'm curious how rigid that
mounting is? Does the antenna flop around inside the tip?

Sorry, I don't have a picture. I imagine it could move a little bit, but
not a whole lot more than the antenna flat on the bottom surface of the
wingtip.

Afterthought on not remember which issue an RVator article was in. I put a spreadsheet together of RVAtor articles from 2001 on (although I haven't updated it with the one this week). Eventually, I'm going to move it to a public page, at the moment, it's in the RV yahoogroups file section.
