|
|
Hey all.
My canopy's are dragging and I want to replace all the rollers and assorted hardware. Doug Sapp has the parts but I am not sure of the steps in getting the sliding canopy's off. The rear one appears that after removing a couple of stops it should slide out towards the tail. The front one, I am not too sure of. Has anyone removed the canopy's on a CJ and do you have any step by step procedures, pictures, diagram, or input on how to replace the rollers ???
Any and all suggestions will appreciated. (And NO, I am not trading my CJ for a YAK!!)........ (Just Kidding).
Happy Flying

Greg,
You'll need a flat head screw driver, with a thin blade also it's shank can't be to large. Also you'll need a special tool to take off the flat notched nuts on the outside of the canopy. At one point this becomes a two man job.
In the INSIDE of the cockpit, about where your shoulder would be, you'll find about a 1/4" hole along the canopy rail. This where you will insert the screw driver. You have line up the bolt that holes the bearing with that hole. The bearing bolt has a very shallow slot for the screw driver and you may have to fiddle with it some to get it to engage.
Meanwhile your partner is out side with the special tool to remove the low profile notched nut. You can make this tool (I did by grinding a pair vice gripes) or using a pair of needle nosed pliers.
You'll need to unscrew 3 bolts on each side. When that is done, move the canopy to the rear where you find a slot in rail where you can remove the bearing bolt. At this point you can pull the bottom of the canopy out slightly to remove the bolts along with the bearing.
Cussing during this process is normal while fiddling.
