Does anyone have any recommendations for certifying a standard CJ6 for IFR ops here in the States? I am a seasoned instrument pilot and keep current in my Piper Arrow, so currency is not really an issue. As for instrumentation on the CJ... I'm installing a second radio a KX155 with Glide slope, 28V electric Western-style DG along with a new turn and bank indicator. I plan to use my hand-held Garmin for Direct once enroute and approved by ATC, but not for approaches. I'm keeping the Chinese attitude indicator. I'm also thinking about a new Trio AP... The intent is to not necessarily fly the airplane down to a Cat 1 approach minimums, rather to be able to recover to home base on a Sunday afternoon when weather is slightly less than VFR. One concern is possibly carb ice... even though my carb heat works, it isn't the greatest in the world. My peter heater works fine. So, having said all that as background, any words of wisdom are welcome.

Jon,

Its experimental exhibition, as long as you have the appropriate radios and instruments and you're rated, and you have the IFR check done, you should be good to go if in a pinch you needed to file in your airplane. I do not believe there is any sort of certification of the airplane required.
Even a certified airplane, if I recall correctly doesn't have to have any special IFR certification, just the equipment to be TSO'd for that airplane. But I do recall someone having to go for a test flight in my Dakota after the installation of a Sandel and 430, and he did do some sort of sign off, so I may be wrong.
I had a 430 in my last CJ, and I used to file /G (not that I filed all that often, remember me and clouds Smile That said, all I did was have the obligatory IFR check done by my local avionics shop and that was it.

I took out ALL my Chinese wiring and put in  three 10” Dynon EFIS panels (2 in front pit, 1 in back), 2 axis autopilot, dual adhars, etc. and got the log book entry for IFR.  I’ve flown it IFR (NO LOW IFR) some and really recommend the auto pilot   I’ve flown dozens of approaches (real/hood) with it and it is a good plane but I still would recommend the AP.

Check out the Dynon D2 backup instrument (attitude, alitimeter, heading, etc.) gps based for not a lot of cash.

Let me know if you have any questions.

John, First I would check you Operating Limitations to make sure your airplane has been blessed for IFR or as I would say you are not restricted to VFR only. My OPS Specs says my airplane is approved for VFR and IFR. If not, then that opens up another can of worms to get it changed. If your good there then FAR91 says you need day and night VFR stuff plus the IFR Specific instruments. Approved and current updates if your using a GPS,  log of VOR checks if using  a VOR for navigation and obviously  the pitot static and transponder and encoder. Current charts electronic or paper and don't mention the crazy Chinese attitude indicator. But if you are IFR using that indicator, I believe your asking for trouble in an upset recovery. I'm going through same process as you and Ernie. I don't gave or want an all glass cockpit. It would be nice but U really don't plan on flying hard IFR. An autopilot is a MUST with single pilot IFR. I'll be looking at an extra radio and the TRIO autopilot at Sun n Fun. Take care. Good advice and info Greg. Before you buy your AP at SNF, let's go together and maybe they'll give us the brother-in-law discount. Looking forward to seeing you there. Jon

I know you said you don’t want a glass cockpit, but while there, check out the Dynon booth.  At least check out the D2 as a backup for ~$1,000  ; http://dynonavionics.com/docs/PocketPanel.html

Here is  quick picture of my pit…  Note: it’s in the hangar so synthetic vision isn’t on.

Take care.

Check out the Dynon D2 backup instrument (attitude, alitimeter, heading, etc.) gps based for not a lot of cash.
