Just put on new engine, some adjustments left. Want to test fly it in the pattern without cowling, to facilitate work on the ground. Anyone have experience with this in regards to cylinder temps

Don't do that!

Any ground running of the engine without the cowling must be limited to idle
or very low power for a short period of time. Flight without the cowl may
well be suicidal.

The reason for this is simply that the cylinders cannot properly cool. Air
cooling depends on the cowl and cylinder baffle combination to force cooling
air under pressure to flow in close contact with the cylinder fins.
That worked for rotary engines and some early radials but without any
cylinder baffling.

Walt

Agreed, don't do it. Without the cowl, airflow is not properly contained/coltrolled. Aerodynamics are also different. I tried it once, made half a lap and was redline.

Don't do it.

Danged! Why take that risk?! It's such a simple cowling to put and take off.
Don't do it. Your CHT's are going to be all over the place! Run it without the cowling then check it with the LASE temp gun. You will be totally confused by the numbers you see. Walt and Bill are correct.

Don't fly it with cowl off. You will be causing all of our War Bird insurance rates to increase ????
