Just FYI, there is a veritherm that is made to fit the Russian oil cooler. There are pro's and con's on whether it is a good idea to have it in there, but for what it is worth, I have it installed in my YAK-50. It takes care of temperature regulation issues in winter and summer. Not suggesting that it eliminates having to pre-heat. However, once the engine is safely started, oil temp comes up very quickly and is stays perfectly in the green even with extremely cold outside temps. Just another way of skinning the cat.

p.s. The real problem is that I do not have a ready source for this piece.

The veritherm system works well. In cold weather, less than 45 degrees, I can see mine open up on the oil temp gauge and send cold oil to the engine. Therefore, I wait until I see it open the first time and let the oil temp come back up into range before I take off. The first time it opens will send the oil temp below normal operating temps. Even with 25W-60 oil, I'm afraid of sending a big glug of 35-40 degree oil to the engine. As always, your mileage may vary...
