Bob, here is a pic of the crimp tool I used.  As I dug the tool out to take a picture, It dawned on me that I had used this on 14ga wires. The tool is not suitable for that size wire.  So, it seems reasonable/likely that the crimps were not formed correctly. Bad crimp, high resistance, crispy wire...?
