Dear all, 



I have an option on a T-hangar which needs the plane to be moved uphill, tail first, into a narrow space (8 inch clearance each side of the HS).  Doing this alone by hand with a Bogi-Bar is likely to result in tail damage sooner rather than later. 



The hangar already has an electric winch installed, which is slow enough but has a pretty brutal yank when starting. 



I’m thinking of attaching the winch cable with a bungee to the top of the nose gear leg, and passing the cable through a karabiner in the tail tie-down to pull the tail straight without exerting any axial force on it. I would still need a dolly for the nose wheel or push the tail down to keep the nosewheel off the ground whilst moving.  Those options seem complex / impractical. 



It’s nice to work the brain again so long after the build is complete, but if someone has already got a great idea or experience I’m happy to borrow!

I also have the uphill problem and would like some more detail on your setup. First, this is a 12 v winch; what is your power source? How is it mounted? I don't have structure on the hangar wall and would have to anchor it to the floor; do you think that would work? Where do you hook it to the plane; tail tie down or elsewhere? Do you have to steer the nose wheel with a towbar while winching? Thanks for your ideas and experience on this.

I will fill you in on what I use.  I've had a couple iterations over the 

many years.



Originally, I had a cheap harbor freight 12V winch with a key fob 

remote.  It did

work, but it was irritating because of a couple things.  First, if you 

get a winch

that can run continuously after hitting "retract" you have to be careful 

in a T-Hangar

because it wouldn't be that hard to have it get out of alignment and 

smack the

tail on the corner or snag a wingtip. Well, my 12V winch didn't run 

continuously,

but it only ran for like 1 second per push.  The problem with that one 

was that

you had to repeatedly push the button and it was super slow.  Also, the 

winch

was poor quality and jammed on me a couple times.

It did work, and I ran it with one of my used PC925 batteries out of the 

RV-10.



Later on, however, I finally got what I really wanted.  Harbor freight sells

electric hoists with remote controls.  They sell 440lb, 880lb, 1300lb and

2000lb models.

Back when I bought mine, I got the 880 or 1300lb model...can't remember 

which,

but it was because the spec sheet said it was faster than the one below it.

Now they all seem to say that the single line speed is 33 fpm.  If 

that's true, than

even the smallest one would do.  33fpm is much faster than my old 12V winch.



With this hoist, I have a system that runs fast enough that it doesn't 

take forever

and moves about the right speed.  You could extend the remote easy enough

by connecting in a longer cable,  or I think they may even sell a remote

adapter for some of them.   I didn't want a long remote cable because if 

you mount

this by the tail, you'd be looking at maybe 60' of length that you'd have to

string out to use it.  So I did it a little differently.  I chopped off 

the remote,

connected in an Arduino style wireless controller with relay board, and 

substituted

the remote for a web controlled system.  I have wifi in the hangar so making

it run with web urls meant that I could do some custom things like make

controlled retract times and such.  So I can click a button and say I want

1/5/10/15/30 seconds of retract time, and it just goes.  I also have 

stop control

at any point.  The hoist itself works real well and I'm happy with it 

for when

I need it.  If there is ice on the ramp, there's no other way I could 

get the plane

in.  I do think that for most people, I'd look into the wireless remotes you

can hook to these things. I think they're available...maybe not from Harbor

Freight, but I think you can get them.



To mount them, you really would have a couple choices. If your back wall 

is tough

you could mount it there.  Mine isn't.  So what I did was this:



I used a masonry saw blade and cut a 12"x12" square out of my hangar floor

asphalt.  I then dug out a cube about 12"x12"x12" out of the ground, and

bought a couple turnbuckles that are about a foot long with 1/2" threaded

eyelets on them.  I stood those up so the turnbuckle would be flush with the

floor, mixed a bag or two of concrete, and poured it in level.  Now I have 2

threaded sockets in the floor that I can screw bolts into.  Make sure you

put the turnbuckle in the right way, because otherwise one end uses reverse

threads.  I can't remember exactly how the hoist is bolted to the 

floor...but

I think I just have a piece of steel or wood bolted to the hoist that 

has holes

for those floor sockets.  So I just set the hoist on the floor and spin 

a couple

of retaining bolts in, plug it in, and it's ready to go.  I only need to use

it a handful of times a year, so I don't leave it on the floor permanently.



As far as usage goes, I hook it to the tail tiedown.  I didn't want to 

accidentally

crank the airplane to the floor, so I have a section of rope that I 

connect to the

plane, that connects to the winch hook. You do still have to steer the nose

while winching.  The tail tiedown is plenty strong for this.  The 

rolling load

of the RV-10 is not really all that high.  Think about how those towbar

pins are...they're just the black oxide bolts in an aluminum fork. Those

aren't all that much stronger than the tail tiedown and you don't

have to push/pull with thousands of pounds of force to tow a plane...only

maybe a couple hundred max.



The hoist to me seems like a much more ideal device than the winches,

if you can get a good control for it that is extended.  Whatever you get,

make sure you can have the controller in hand or on you while you

run it, even if it takes some ingenuity.
