  Did anyone address just how and where to service the Chinese compass unit
  on the Nanchang? I think Justin and Walt were batting that back and forth.
  I tinkered with mine (and examined a spare that I have) and I can't tell if
  it actually has compass fluid in it, or where in tarnation you'd put it.
  Any suggestions?

  Hi Skip;

  To top up or re-fill you need to remove the viewing window.  For this you n
  eed 2 minor tools.   1. A small wrench made from 1/16=9D steel sheet
  to remove the retaining ring (very simple to make) and 2.  A small suction
  cup to remove the window.

  If you can clearly see the compass dial through the window it is likely ful
  l of still clean fluid.  Looking at your spare you can tilt the whole unit
  and see if you observe any fluid sloshing but of course can=99t do th
  at with the mounted unit.

  It should be completely full with no air space.  If you are unable to clear
  ly read the dial chances are the fluid is contaminated and may require remo
  val of the upper
  cover for cleaning.  This would have to be done at the bench.

  If all is well you will want to calibrate (swing) the compass.  it has the
  same adjustable corrector magnets as any other magnetic compass.  But more:
    Heading errors can be averaged and mostly taken out by rotating the entir
  e unit in the mount.

  Calibration can be a long and tedious process!  Whether it=99s worth
  the effort is an individual decision.  I did mine probably 20+ years ago an
  d rarely ever leave the local area and if I go somewhere I use the GPS.  Th
  ough it is nice to think you have some accurate back-up nav. info.  But, ho
  w accurate is it 20+ years after calibration and the mag. north pole is doi
  ng strange things.

  To swing it (or any mag. compass) one needs to know the local area declinat
  ion and have access to a master compass or an up to date compass rose.  Las
  t I heard the magnetic north pole was changing location so fast (relative t
  erm) it may have left Canada and moved to Russia!  Been meaning to look it
  up because (at least in Canada) we are supposed to have a current compass c
  ard in the aircraft!

  All the best;
  Walt

  Did anyone address just how and where to service the Chinese compass unit o
  n the Nanchang? I think Justin and Walt were batting that back and forth. I
   tinkered with mine (and examined a spare that I have) and I can't tell if
  it actually has compass fluid in it, or where in tarnation you'd put it. An
  y suggestions?

    Epilogue to my tachometer troubles...

    After chasing wires and cleaning connections, I finally disassembled &
    thoroughly cleaned my hitherto-exposed cannon plug on the Chinese tach
    generator in the engine compartment.
    Redressing the wire run and c.plug with oil resistant tape, it's run like
   a
    champ for the last 4 flights.
    Fwd and aft gauges in perfect synch.

    So, I'm calling the system fixed.
    Thx for all the inputs-
