IGN circuit breaker blows and won’t reset.

New M-14P on a CJ. Went to actuate the start solenoid for the first time now that the system has air on it again after a year of sitting.

I turned on the master and ignition and I heard the shower of sparks (from Chinese engine, worked great when I took that engine off) buzz. Then the ignition CB popped and won’t reset. Even if I turn off the master.

Any ideas on where to begin troubleshooting?

 Jon

				Bad circuit breaker. Start there.

I’m guessing they are switch circuit breakers?

For reasons beyond the scope of this discussion 🙂 I just happen to have a new ZKC-5 circuit breaker switch from Doug, which is exactly what the IGN switch is.

Previously I'd turned the switch on but hadn't pressed the start button. Today was the first press of the start button. I heard the shower of sparks buzz just before the circuit breaker popped.

   So, the plan is:
    - Replace the circuit breaker
 - Disconnect the two canon plugs to the shower of sparks 2Q and start solenoid 3Q
 - Press the start button and see if that causes the breaker to pop (bad canon plug somewhere maybe, wiring issue)
 - Connect the 3Q canon plug and see if that makes it pop
 - Connect the 2Q canon plug and see if that makes it pop
What would make a shower of sparks "go bad"?

Is a new shower of sparks "impossible to find" as I've heard?

Remove the breaker and test it on the bench with an ohm meter. If it doesn’t reset after removal, replace the breaker. They can fail. Dennis

Open up the shower of sparks container and you’ll see a set of points next to a thumb wheel. See if the points are “welded” together. If they are, the shower of sparks will not work. If you remove the starting coil wire from the unit and deplete all the air forward of the main air valve (OFF) by squeezing the brake handle until you no longer hear air “whishing” when you release the brake handle, the engine will not rotate or start when you press the start button to see if the points are “arcing” when the start button is pressed.
