Hello
I have a LOM M332 aircraft engine with 2 factory magnetos and an MGL V16 radio.
Antenna is copper foil with balun epoxied into the VS
There are no filters installed.
While listening to ATIS (118.1) there is a ticking sound that is linked to the right magneto, it goes away when right mag is switched off.
No noise when running only on left mag
While listening to ATIS I can also hear static that is not there on the other frequencies
I cannot be 100% certain but I think the noise is new.
This noise is not present when listening to Tower (121.9) or other frequencies.
Any ideas on what could cause this
Thanks
Mike

A few thoughts:
1) The right mag is equipped with an external starting device, either a buzzer or a SlickStart presumably. I would be inclined to carefully inspect the shielding of the wiring related to that. The HT leads and plugs also need careful inspection of course. A loose cap, a corroded lead etc may cause a spark to occur where it shouldn't and so generate a tick.
2) Can you tell if you hear one tick per revolution of one tick per four revolutions? That would tell you whether you are looking for a primary side, or an HT/plug related issue
3) Are your 'P' leads long enough to swap from side to side? Doing so would again isolate the issue to the starter system and wiring, or the magneto.
I suspect you are going to have to narrow things down by swapping/replacing/inspecting.

Thank you very much for the input, on my installation the slickstart is on the left mag looking forward. I will start by swapping the “P” leads, did not think of that, will let you know
Keep well
Mike
