Hey guys,
I am curious how many have run a blast tube to the alternator? It looks like Deb and JIM ran one from the air inlet on the right side but I don't remembed seeing any others. Planepower recommends it in the instructions. If you are running one WHERE are you locating it to get the air?
ALSO....I have the smaller pulley and cannot use the alternator belt Vans sends with the Plane power 60 amp unit. If anyone has a need for it and the camlocks for the OIL door let me know. These will only get duty around here.

We have put in the blast tube for the alternator. I don’t know if it is needed or not, but I remember seeing it on the baffle instructions from Van’s. so they must have one on theirs. We put it on the right inlet air ramp.

Tim and Jesse,
How big of an inlet / hose did you use? where did you get the hardware to rivet to the air ramp?

You should have received the blast tube bracket for the rear of
the alternator along with the alternator. Then you just buy
some SCAT hose from Aircraft Spruce or similar, and they also
sell the aluminum flanges for the SCAT too. Should be
probably about $10 for everything I'd guess. I think it's
1" SCAT, but it might be smaller.

I just used the corrugated hose that comes in the blast tube kit.  You drill a hole the size of the smaller OD and then squeeze the tube through it so there is one “rib” sticking through the hole and then seal around it so it doesn’t come loose.  I don’t think there is any riveting involved, at least with the small stuff (about ¾”) that I used.

Dean, Jesse's question is making me ask another question... When you
get the Plane-Power alternator from Van's, do you not get the
metal flange with it to attach SCAT to the back of the alternator?
If you do, then I would think it would clearly mean you don't use
the corrugated black blast tube material. I got my Plane-Power
alternator direct from them, not from Van's, so I'm trying to determine
if they somehow changed what they give for hardware to "cheapen"
it to the Van's specs. If you did get an approximately 1" flange
though, then you'll be using the same 1" SCAT that I did, most likely.

Sorry I don't have great photos of this...I'll have to rectify that,
but here's one where you can make out the SCAT tube on the
alternator:
http://www.myrv10.com/N104CD/finishing/20051228/RV200512270048.html

And here's a huge one where you can just make out the flange on
the lower ramp on the right side:

Tim,
Vans does NOT send any scat tube or flange with the alternator. The instructions tell you to hook one up but does not say where or give you the hardware to do so. It appears yours is aimed right into the rear of the alternator. How did you attach the scat to the alternator? Anyway to get a better pic of that........hoping to fabricate a piece to attach the scat to the alt. or clamp it so it is directed at the rear of it.
Thanks,
DEAN 40449

In reading this I'm asking myself another question that I would
appreciate someone/anyone addressing: Is this (blast tube)
recommended/required for ALL alternator installations or is it
particular to the plane power installation. The reason I'm asking is
that I purchased the B&C alternators and am wondering if they
need/require the same. If the answer is yes does the SD-20 also require
a blast tube?

THANKS

Is this the "deluxe" alternator, which is the Plane-power? And is it
the 70A, or 60A? Mine is the 70A alternator. It came with a 3-eared
piece that bolts onto the alternator, and has a flange on it so that
you can attach 1" SCAT. I'm not sure what they packaged with the
Plane-Power 60A, but I'd bet it's similar. The thing is, I can
easily see the install kit being "cheapened" by Van's....that is,
Plane power sells one thing, but Van's sells 95% of it to save
cost. I would suggest that you call plane-power directly and
ask them about the SCAT tubing onto the alternator...perhaps if
the above is the case, you can get them to send you the proper
flange piece. I'm not sure if Van's is carrying the 70A and
the 60A, or just the 60A. The 70A is a very nice alternator
and fits well too. Not that I need it, as my total draw is
about 27-36A, depending on if it's day or night.

Blast tube's are common items on alternators on many certified planes.
Not all alternator companies really plan all installations around
them though. I'm sure there are people out there with tubes on
their B&C's, but probably hundreds without too. The same will be
the case with most any alternator. The thing about alternators
though, is they last longer and perform better when they're not
hot, so it's a good idea...something that at least should be
thought about, but dealt with however you choose. I don't
know if the SD-20 would have an arrangement for one or not, seeing
as it's a standby, but if it were in use, it might be nice.

Blast tubes are also used on Mags, and on fuel pumps. I've been
working with Aircraft Spruce to get them to start carrying one of
the fuel pump cooling shrouds so that we can blast cool our fuel
pumps too, like on some installations. It sounds like they
should be carrying them within a couple months or so.

FYI, I wrote to B&C regarding this question and whether it was a
recommendation for their alternators. I received their response today as
follows:.

Deems,

Whether an alternator needs a SCAT or not is part of the design of the
alternator. We have never recommended a SCAT nor do we have provisions
for one on the alternator. Our alternator is always mounted under the
cylinders of a Lycoming and we have not seen any heat related failures.
Some builders provide a SCAT anyway and just point it at the rear of the
alternator where the diodes are.
