Several approaches to this......
Paint large block letters on the side & wings: S H E R I F F
Or, F B I, or, D E A, etc; nobody will ask,
Use camo paint (nobody will see it),
Or paint it yellow, stencil HIGHWAY DEPT on the side ( sleep under the wing...that'll look normal ), ((Have somebody lean on a shovel to add realism)),
Put spray booms on the plane, look "agricultural", wear bib overalls.
Put up a wind sock. You are automatically at an airport....."Look, Mommy, an airport!"

All kidding aside, it is not advisable to land on any nice flat grassy field, by choice, until you have walked it.
Ride a four-wheeler at 40 MPH across the field. That'll give you a feel for suitability.
Legal issues not withstanding, you need to KNOW the field beforehand.
And, with winter nearly here, beware of cow piles. A fresh one, frozen solid, is comparable to a large rock.

Personally, I like grass runways. They differ a bit from paved ones, but they're fun. You can usually taxi in any direction you desire without permission from Ground.

Regards,

Zed

When they are fresh and completely thawed out they are comparable to an IRS agent.

Ed, I always enjoy your humor and I'm sure the IRS surveillance agents scanning this thread for 'narr do wells' and evil tax evaders know your just kidding. You are, Right ? If not, you guys contact me off line and I'll lead you to right to him. Ha. Ed, something brilliant I just arrived at something with my dull attorney brain; '"buy the very best instruments you can afford." I had to replace the electric turn coordinator this weekend to the tune of $565.00. I had bought a non TSO'ed and it cost $289.00 and with less than 100 hours kaput,, total loss ! Looking back over the last 15 months I replaced two altimeters, two vac gages, CHT gages, DG and now a turn coordinator and I have a VFR only instrument panel. Save on paint, save on interior,, but buy the best you can for instruments because the "cheap" ones will break soon and often. New rule: anything that has electricity passing through it,, buy best !! By the way, when you coming over this way and learn how to fly an XL anyway ? Best regards, Bill

Zed,

Also, don't forget about US ARMY and NAVY insignia. I know from personal experience that, even if you get a complaint, it has traveled in a very peculiar route that allows you to at least laugh at the ignorance of the complainant.

I'm waiting on an Advanced Flight Systems AF-3500. It's an EFIS/EIS combo built around a Crosssbow AHRS just like the wealthy and the airlines use. I am only backing it up with a whiskey compass, my Lowrance Airmap 2000C, a tach, and an ASI steam gauge. I've bought a Becker transceiver and a Becker transponder, and a PS 501 intercom. My dad and I worked on the rear frame and baggage area tonight. Hell, I feel like I'll be doing good just to get it inspected before Christ comes back to round us up.... maybe I can give Him a ride.... I owe Him that much at least.

When you flying over here for crawfish and boudin?

John . . . I am a land developer and own a 701 in progress. The first
place to start is to go to the Town(ship) where you're interested in
locating and ask the code enforcement officer in the building dept (or
the head of the building dept.) if private air strips are permitted.
Avoid the word "airport" - it sounds massive and noisy. I generally
buy a copy of the code and verify his answer osk for copies of the pages
which apply. Some towns if you go out far enough from metro areas don't
even have building codes, and then you should be golden, but
verification is still necessary.

When selecting a piece of land if possible have it so the runway and the
next 1000 ft. beyond (even if on the neighbor's land) isn't aligned with
anyone's home, tall trees, high hills - anything that can kill you if
you have an engine out on take off. If you can avoid flying over the
neighbors on takeoff and landing, that is a big plus. Low flying planes
over one's home make people nervous, especially if they aren't from the
aviation community. If you want to discuss anything else, you can write
me privately at hrs1(at)frontiernet.net. Good luck. Robert Schoenberger 701

That is what I did on my property in NY. There was another private one a few miles away, so I didn't ask and just put it in. One suggestion is if have the property make the runway as long as possible especially if you have obstructions. You also might want to change airplanes or have some friends come over, just gives you more options.

Consider the density altitude at which you will be operating from such a short strip before proceeding. It doesn't sound like you are leaving much room for trouble.

Hi John,
One thing to do, as Robert has mentioned, is to check with the County. I live outside any city limits, so I follow the County rules. I was able to download them from the Colorado Counties web sites, and looked at their "land proposals/usage" section. Also, I have contacted the (2) neighbors close to me, 1/4 mile and farther, and have mentioned to them that I will perfrom my flights, No Earlier Than, 6:00am and No Later Than, 9:00pm. If I anticipate anytime outside of these hours, I will call them and give them a "heads up" and forwarn them in advance.

Also, offering "free rides" should also be a plus to get the neighbors favor!!
Good luck,

Keith

I built a private airstrip on a ranch I own out here in Wyoming. I live in Jackson Hole and ol N801BH spends most of its time up here. My ranch is 38 air miles and 102 driving miles from home. All I needed was to petition the county for a conditional use permit, 25.00$ and three readings from the planning board and three readings from the commision. On the very last hearing there was five items on the agenda, mine was last. So I sat there and when the first four were processed there was still six people left in the audiance,,,,, I thought to myself. oh geez a bunch of "not on my backyard" people.... Believe it or not all six were in favor of it cause they were all pilots and I had requested the FAA to chart it for someone to use in case of an emergency.. Denver FAA wanted to know what I was going to call it so of course I replied " Haas International"... It is in most databases using the identifier 2WY3. The good news is it is 3000' long,,, the bad news is it is located at 7960 MSL. Which really isn't bad for my fire breathing 801. <G>

One idea no one has post:
Why not look for a airstrip already developed with hangar -houses around... They can be found in almost all prices, I visited some in Texas that had grass strips and were not (very) expensive. Some on the other side, with concrete strips and remote electric entrance gate for the cars an lots of luxury...

Just a comment, hope it helps.
