Robert Bosch (yes, the same as the German company Bosch)invented and
patented the spark plug as we know it today. He let anyone use the
patent without paying a royalty fee IF THE THREADS WERE METRIC!

So explain how virtually every American car post WWII used 14mm plugs,
until they went to those tiny ones. Perhaps 14mm and 18mm just happen to
be equal to an English thread size. Especially since they both require
an English unit plug socket, either 13/16 or 7/8.
