Hi Listers,

I am new to Texas so everywhere I go is a new adventure. I am planning a
trip from north east Texas to San Diego during the Christmas holidays. It
appears this route takes me over lots of restricted area in NM. Is there a
preferred route that others take this direction? I will need to include
fuel stop in there as well somewhere. Any recommendations welcome.

Thanks
Tim Bryan RV-6

St Johns, AZ, has the least expensive fuel in the area and is about halfway
to San Diego. The airfields in San Diego are easily approached from the east
and I'll buy you lunch if you stop in Yuma.

As far as fuel stops go, here are some ideas:

Double check these prices and DO NOT ARCHIVE

KSJN - St. Johns, AZ is always among the cheapest. Currently $2.90
according to Airnav.
KCGZ - Casa Grande, AZ is $3.08.
KCHD - Chandler, AZ is $3.16.
L35 - Big Bear, CA is $3.10.

http://www.airnav.com/fuel lets you scope out fuel prices along the route
(and sometimes not-so-along the route), if you're on a budget like the rest
of us. Wink

If you mean the TX Panhandle, for the smoothest ride, stick to I 40 until
past ABQ, then to St. Johns, then direct Casa Grande and follow I-8 the
rest of the way...being careful about the jog in the border at Yuma.
On the other hand, if you mean somewhere N of Dallas, go straight to ELP,
with a dogleg for Guadalupe Pass, follow I-10 to Casa Grande, then I-8.
Do not attempt to go through White Sands Missle Range, even if you find
the 0.06% of the time that it isn't closed, because the sharp peaks cause
moderate to severe turbulence that you don't want any part of.
Cheapest fuel stops on the northern Route, BGD, AEG, SJN, CGZ. Southern
Route, Wink, Pecos, Las Cruces, CGZ.

Thanks to all who posted on this as it helped me get a perspective. It
looks like a little jogging, but not bad if I plan:

3TX1 to PEQ (fuel stop)
PEQ to CGZ via ELP (Fuel Stop)
CGZ to SDM

Looks like I can miss the restricted, and hopefully the pass.

Sandia airpark 1N1, just east of ABQ, is a fun place to stop. The lady at the desk is a hoot. My son slept on night at KAEG - Double Eagle II Airport. He said it is a first class place. Winslow is a good airport, but is doses not mean "Wind is Low" especially in the summer. Meteor crater is just past Winslow. Sadona is just south of Meteor Crater if you are interested in a aircraft landing type approach. Actually I have enjoyed most places I landed in the West.

Not sure about points farther east but exercise care in the Eloy, AZ area
(E60)-much parachute activity there, so don't overfly. Also, east of Brown
Field (SDM) there is skydiving both north and south of V317. I'd suggest you
join that airway by the time you pass over Reider Ranch (CA75).which is just
outside of San Diego's TCA. Check your chart-lot's of parachute and soaring
activity in SoCal.
