This is an email that I sent to Phil Lockwood at Lockwood Aviation Supply. Bottom line is that Rotax has been supplying defective oil filters for quiet some time. Most of us are in the habit of turning our prop until the burp is herd from the oil tank(30 to 40) compression strokes before starting. If you had one of the defective filters you would need to turn your prop through at least 100 compression strokes and perhaps as many as 150 compression strokes to insure that oil is immediately available for the engine upon start. Fortunetly, I was persistant and turned and turned my prop until I heard the air from the tank. Many of the owners that I know simply did not do that and they may have damaged their engines.
I have good information that Rotax and their major dealers in the U.S. were aware of the problem and I for one am darned mad that they dragged their feet about telling us. Not sure I will be able to believe Rotax again.
