On this note, not having used either (I have a 196) what impact do you think the higher refresh, etc. of the 496 vs the 396 would have on it's utility as an emergency IFR backup.
My own experience with the instruments simulation screen on the 196 leads me to think that a faster response would greatly improve the device's utility for such an emergency.
Of course my extremely limited actual instrument time (not being IFR qualified that's a good thing) makes me want to avoid jumping to my own conclusions.
Any thoughts on that? I realize it's a little early to be planning my panel! <grin>

Robbie:
Personally I feel strongly about having redundancy for all critical systems in IFR. I use 2 separate EFIS units in my -8A just for this reason. The xx6 Garmins have a nice panel page but (in my opinion) not really capable of serving as a panel (even partial) in IMC.
My two cents.

John,
Wx is also possible with the Garmin 396.

With trembling fingers, I key in a question to this most interesting SERV group...I am a "lurker"...often confused by the mysterious jargon, abbreviations, destinations and issues with A/C systems and construction..maybe, someday I will be "clear on top" and understand! (I remain a dedicated RV "wannabe" hopefully soon to regain my certifications)
I did see that reference to the Garmin 496..whoever is "leading" this formation, please consider keeping me in the loop..the benefit of such a unit, and Wx info appears to be worth considering for an old fart getting back into the air...$ savings might make the final decision!

Thanks for the advice. I tend to agree, to the extent that I don't have any experience and therefor have an uninformed opinion. I was thinking of the panel as more of a "worst case scenario" total systems failure option.
