Wx is also possible with the Garmin 396.

John, the 396 does everthing that a 496 does just not as fast.The weather is the same,because the gps does not have anything to do with the wx.

Don’t forget the higher terrain resolution for the 496 and the (wonderful!) full automotive database.
I use mine in the car as much as the plane. Weather while driving is neat.

Gentlemen,
If I could chime in here for a second... I'm a good way from being ready to buy my GPS, but I was half way planning on the 396 until the 496 came out. The 496 has three features the 396 doesn't.
For the traveler...
(1) It has AOPA's 5300 entry airport directory installed which includes names and phone numbers of FBO's, restaurants, and hotels.
(2) It has what Garmin calls the "Safe Taxi" feature where you are able to see your postion on an airport diagram to help prevent runway incursions and,
(3) It has the "Smart Airspace" feature that alerts you to potential airspace issues based on your altitude.

My chime is to get the Lowrance 2000c it has all these features but weather.
Might I mention the largest screen and it below $900.00 unless you have
settled on the Garmin.
