Woke up this morning to 4 inches of snow but clearing conditions, so I went out to the airport full of hope. After tinkering for a couple of hours waiting for the fog to lift I decided to try taxiing my model 5 with tricycle tube gear for a bit. It took a lot more throttle to get her moving (kind of like me on a cold day) and ground handling was a little odd. Despite my pleadings the fog never lifted although pale blue could be seen when looking straight up. Hope Santa has better luck with visibility for his flight tomorrow night. Merry Christmas!

yikes...
Years ago I grabbed the 152 from the local club to go spot carribou. After 3 hrs I had to swing into Port Alsworth as nature was screaming in my ear to "pull over". There was 4-6" of fresh fluffy snow on the runway, but I figured what the heck.. its 3000' long so it would not be a problem.. Landing was VERY short, and takeoff was aborted twice before I finally got that pig into the air... I had many soft field takeoffs in the plane before but never in snow....I would never have thought in a million years that only that little amount of snow would have that much drag.

Now I dont set one down unless I am on big tundra tires (31") or skis / full lotus floats.
