|
|
Here are some pictures of the prop spacer that goes from my Rotax 912-S to the Kiev Hot Prop. It is made out of aluminum and the shaft is tapered to only two inches at its narrow point. This setup is on a Kolb pusher, but many Kitfoxes use the same class engines and props, so im hoping someone here might know the answer to this.
All the spacers I have ever seen have the prop bolts go all the way through from the prop hub to the steel engine output flange. With this spacer the entire load is transmitted to the prop through 2 inches of aluminum. After reading stories of high streingth bolts breaking on occasion, I am wonding how just 2 inches of aluminum could be safe to transmit 100 HP to the prop. Has anyone ever seen a prop adapter / spacer like this ? Is this very likely to fail and let the entire prop fly into the back of my Kolb ? Would you guys trust this ? Any thought you may have would be appreciated.

In General it is not the bolt that prevent the flange, prop or hub extension to move relative to each other it is the friction between them from the squeezing effect of the bolts, if the torque of the bolts is not enough the bolts will be sheered off in a short time.
The small diameter of the hub extension is a different issue, it have to be analyzed and tested on each engine that take it. it is a big different from a 912 and 912 -S the torque of engine isn't the big thing here but torsion vibrations, and the -S is reported to be hard in this respect, there is additional items to add to the gearbox, making it a little better, but it is an option.

All other considerations aside, I think one important consideration would be
if it is cast aluminum or cut from a solid billet. It it's cast, I wouldn't
trust it for a minute.

Hi Team .
I hope you all have very Happy Christmas.. Re the Prop
spacer (if it's cast)...............It depends on several factors, what type
of Al. is it made from, under what conditions was it cast, what was the
casting medium,(die or sand, low presure or high) heat treated or not. To
make the statment that one would "not trust it for a moment" is to not know
the facts. Casting are used in every aircraft that ever left the ground, the
wing pivot on F111 is one of the largest. Not one WW2 aircraft was built
without castings, especially engine parts, as with everything, if it's
properly engineered, and not done "on the cheap" it will be "fit for use" .
I think the main problem with this spacer, could be one of balance, thus
putting stress on the engine/gearbox bearings, how often is the full 100hp
used or should be used??? Just my 2cents!!!!
